At the Abbott mansion, Jack recalled how Diane found him in bed with Patty on the yacht. His mind wandered to confronting Patty when he told her there was nothing she could do or say to make him believe that she had changed. Patty had noted that Jack gave Diane the benefit of the doubt and was looking for the same.

Despite what Jack had told Patty about his feelings for Diane, she insisted that they also had an irresistible connection and told him he would be very surprised by how it all worked out. Kyle interrupted Jack’s thoughts when he told him that Diane hadn’t been seen at work or the GCAC since they returned from Maryland.

When Jack heard from his P.I. that Diane’s car had also been parked at the GCAC for two days and that the housekeeping staff confirmed she hadn’t slept in her room for two nights either, he called Detective Burrow. He told Kyle that Diane wasn’t hiding; she was missing — and he knew exactly who was behind it.

Detective Burrow came over and got the details from Jack and Kyle about what they knew, though they didn’t tell him that Diane had disappeared for years in the past. Kyle pointed out that she wouldn’t just leave work without getting someone to cover for her. They focused their suspicions on Patty Williams and explained why she was the most likely suspect.

At Chancellor Park Café, Patty met with Dr. Laurence Markham, who told her everything had gone as planned. Patty warned she would be very unhappy if anything had been mishandled, but Dr. Markham assured her he was used to dealing with these kinds of situations. Patty slipped him an envelope of cash under the table.

“I’m going to need proof that everything is as we discussed, and then we can move ahead to the next phase,” Patty said. Behind them, Traci came around the corner but retreated quickly. She called Jack and told him that Patty was with a man and that she could tell they were up to no good.

Meanwhile, Dr. Markham told Patty she’d have proof within the hour before walking away. On his way out of the park, Dr. Markham literally bumped into Traci, giving her a good look at him. She approached Patty and asked who he was.

Patty explained that he was the doctor who treated her at the facility where she’d been staying. Traci called her out, saying that the facility wasn’t in Genoa City and that it made no sense for him to travel that far for a checkup. “This lie is very unbecoming,” Traci added.

Traci snapped that she questioned the validity of a doctor who would deem Patty fit for society. When Patty gave his name, she offered to have Traci look him up. Traci said she’d report him for letting Patty back on the street because she hadn’t changed one iota.

Jack arrived and agreed before demanding to know where his wife was. Patty insisted she had nothing to do with Diane’s disappearance and implied that Diane had chosen not to be with him. She said she was glad he had called the police but warned that she suspected it would turn out to be something he wasn’t expecting.

Jack told her it would be exactly what he expected and would end with Patty back in the institution where she belonged. Jack and Traci walked away as Patty received a message on her phone.

Patty Stuns Jack

Back home, Traci and Jack researched Dr. Markham and discovered that he ran the Markham Behavioral Clinic upstate. Traci explained that Patty had been transferred there from Rivercrest and that she’d kept tabs on Patty after what she did to Colleen.

Traci took a call, and moments later, there was a knock at the door. Jack was stunned to find Patty standing there. Jack said he’d only let Patty in if she had information about Diane.

Patty handed him her phone, which displayed a photo of Diane sleeping in bed, and suggested they talk about Diane’s future — and theirs. Jack yelled at her for lying, but Patty insisted she was trying to protect him from the “crazy woman he called his wife.”

Patty Gives Jack an Impossible Choice

Patty claimed Diane had suffered a breakdown and that she’d found her screaming in the parking lot. She said she contacted Dr. Markham, who referred her to a doctor at a facility that could care for Diane. Jack grabbed his phone and threatened to call the police if Patty didn’t tell him where Diane was.

Patty calmly warned that involving the police would be disastrous for Diane. She argued that Jack couldn’t view the situation objectively because of the guilt he carried over contributing to Diane’s breakdown. Patty made herself a drink and suggested Jack have one as well to take the edge off.

Jack told Patty that they did have a connection and praised her for understanding what he needed. He added that if she truly knew him so well, she would understand that he couldn’t relax until he knew Diane was safe.

Patty soothingly insisted that he needed to let Diane go because it could take years for her treatment to be completed and that Diane would never be the same. “I’m sorry, she’s never going to return to you,” Patty told him.

Jack played along with Patty’s theory that Diane couldn’t handle finding them together, but he couldn’t convince Patty to let him see Diane. Patty told him to control himself because Diane’s well-being was in his hands. She explained that he had to choose her and they would be together. If not, she implied that something “unexpected” would happen to Diane.

Diane Wakes Up Trapped

In a home she didn’t recognize, Diane awoke and stumbled into the living room. She called out to see if anyone was there, but got no response. To her horror, Diane realized she was locked inside. There was no phone, bars covered the windows, and dogs patrolled outside.

Diane urged herself to stay calm and figure out where she was. Looking through a bookshelf, she noticed a series of books written by the same author: Alan Laurent. “What the hell is going on?” she asked.

Searching for something to pick the lock, Diane found a letter opener. As she jiggled the lock, Dr. Markham let himself in, smiled calmly, and said he was glad she was awake. He told her she looked much better than when she arrived. Diane pointed the letter opener at him and demanded to leave, but he said he first needed to assess her mental state.

Dr. Markham explained that he needed to determine whether she posed a danger to herself or others, noting that using the letter opener as a weapon suggested she did. Diane snapped that, given the circumstances, she had every reason to protect herself. Dr. Markham agreed that her reaction was understandable and revealed that she was staying in his private residence until he determined where she should go next.

Dr. Markham insisted Diane had suffered a nervous breakdown and that he had found her on the side of the road. Diane refused to believe him, but he argued that her inability to remember events supported his diagnosis. After taking the letter opener, he offered to make tea.

Diane Asks To Be Committed

Diane refused to drink it, but Dr. Markham said he wanted her to know that he had no ill intentions. Since she would be there for a while, he wanted her to trust him. He told Diane that when he found her, he contacted the police, and Jack immediately came to her side. According to Dr. Markham, Jack blamed himself for her condition and told him, “Do whatever you have to do to make her better.”

Diane insisted that her husband would never leave her alone with a stranger. “Again, I’ll ask you: What do you remember?” Dr. Markham said. Diane recalled working late and leaving around 9 p.m. Dr. Markham claimed he found her at 9:45 p.m., screaming and inconsolable.

His assessment was that she had suffered a nervous breakdown caused by extreme abandonment and loss. Since then, he believed she had developed a defense mechanism of denial to shield herself from the pain.

Dr. Markham suggested they work together to uncover the source of that pain and confront it. Diane agreed that it sounded serious but insisted she wanted to be transferred to a clinic immediately. “I refuse to spend one more minute in your home. Let me leave now!” Diane demanded.
