The Young and the Restless Recap April 20: Lily introduces her brother, Malcolm’s Results, Sally and Billy Discuss Pregnancy

TL;DR: In today’s Young and the Restless recap, Lily and Holden shock Nate and Devon with the news that they are related, while Malcolm gets devastating results about his health. Meanwhile, Sally and Billy deal with the emotional weight of a positive pregnancy test and their history of loss.

The Young and the Restless Recap April 20

At Society, Lily came in to dine alone but bumped into Holden, who invited her to join him. After acknowledging how awkward it was, they talked about Malcolm. 

Lily told Holden some things about Malcolm, like his adventurous nature and how he believes that things always work out. She asked if Holden was hoping to have a relationship with Malcolm.

Lily thought it made sense that Holden would want one, but Holden wasn’t so sure. He noted that now that Malcolm was sick, he didn’t want to seem gratuitous. He said he wasn’t resentful to Malcolm, but had mixed emotions about his mom keeping the secret for so long.

Holden shared what it was like for him to grow up as the kid with the dead dad, and how everyone else’s father would show up to their games and events. He said his mom didn’t know how he used to lie to people to pretend his father was alive, so he wouldn’t feel so out of place with other kids.

Lily told Holden he couldn’t undo those moments, but was hopeful for the future. Holden was resentful that he and Malcolm were both robbed of time together, and now didn’t know how much longer they would have.

Lily assured Holden that he would be welcomed into the Winters family and wanted to tell everyone as soon as possible. Holden didn’t know what the best thing to do was, but knew he wanted to be in the loop from then on about Malcolm.

Nate Meets Stephanie

At the GCAC, Nate overheard Stephanie give her name to the bartender and clarified that she was Dr. Stephanie Simmons, who knew his mom, Olivia. Stephanie was thrilled when she realized who he was and gave him a hug.

Stephanie and Nate got to know one another, and he noted he’d watched some of her lectures online. They knew quite a bit about one another through Olivia, including how he left medicine.

Stephanie noted that she and Olivia didn’t usually shop-talk about being doctors, and spent most of their time talking about their sons. Nate was surprised when Stephanie mentioned her son’s name.

Nate told Stephanie that he’d met him a few times, but didn’t know him well. She said maybe that could change.

Stephanie and Nate talked about how awful it was when, as doctors, they couldn’t save a patient. Stephanie noted that when the opposite happened, and they could give someone another day with their family, it was magic.

Lily called and interrupted, asking to see him and Devon for a family meeting at Society. 

The Pregnancy Test

At home, Billy and Sally did another pregnancy test to be sure. “It’s positive, too. So now the question is, what do we do?” Sally asked. Billy asked when Sally suspected she might be pregnant, and why.

Sally explained feeling exhaustion and nausea; Billy pointed out that she’d experienced it before. He wondered what her thoughts were about the pregnancy, but said to take her time to process.

Billy knew that Sally was afraid to tell him she was pregnant, as she’d turned to Audra instead of him. “What does that say about us moving forward?” he asked.

Billy told Sally that he wanted to be someone she could count on. Tearfully, Sally told Billy that one of the reasons she didn’t tell him was because Ava was on her mind, and she knew that he had been through so much already with Delia.

“We already lost the two most precious little people. How can we take that chance again?” she cried to an emotional Billy. Both said they would dream about their daughters and thought about life if they were with them today.

The Only Certainty Is Uncertainty

Billy liked to think that Delia was with Katherine and hoped she was proud of him despite the mistakes he’d made. He wanted to try harder at being a father and admitted he was afraid of failure.

Sally cried about her guilt for being there and Ava not surviving. She worried about dreaming or getting excited about the baby, and then it happening again. She said the difference was that this time, she knew Billy would be there for her. “That’s all I can ask for,” Billy told her.

Billy held Sally as he talked about parenting, loss, and the impossible desire to be perfect. “We’ll go side by side as a team?” Sally asked. “You made that sound like a question. It’s a certainty,” Bill smiled. Sally smiled back and repeated in the form of a statement, “We’ll go side by side, as a team.”

The Family Meeting

Devon and Nate came to Society, and Lily didn’t stall in telling them the news that Holden was her half-brother through Malcolm. Nate said he’d just been with Stephanie, but she didn’t mention anything. Holden helped Lily fill in the blanks about his mom, but they hadn’t gotten to the part of Malcolm being sick.

Holden offered to give them some time to talk privately. Holden went to GCAC and asked his mom about his conversation with Nate and if he’d mentioned how he’d rubbed Nate and Devon the wrong way. Stephanie thought he was making assumptions since Nate didn’t mention anything like that.

Stephanie told Holden that nothing about this was his doing or choice and offered to help smooth things out for him. “What does that say if I need my mother to handle this for me? Whatever happens, it’ll be okay,” Holden said. 

“Now you sound like Malcolm,” Stephanie said with a smile. Holden told her that he wasn’t part of the family and they needed time to process. She told him to do the same.

Malcolm Gets The Results

As soon as he walked away, Devon told Lily to tell him how she really felt. “You’re calling him family, but Tucker is basically our family. You know where I’m going with this, right?” Devon added.

Lily didn’t know how she felt, but said there was time to figure it out. Nate reminded her with love that Damian was proof that time wasn’t infinite. Lily agreed but said she had more on her mind.

Devon assumed it was about Cane, but then asked if it was about Malcolm. Lily clammed up, so Devon reminded her that they couldn’t help if she didn’t share with them what was going on.

Just then, Malcolm called and told Lily that neither of the kids was a match. Lily returned to Devon and Nate in tears.
