The Young and the Restless Names Jamey Giddens and Dan O’Connor as New Co-Head Writers
The Young and the Restless has officially found its next creative team.
CBS has named Jamey Giddens and Dan O’Connor as the show’s new co-head writers, replacing Josh Griffith after his recent departure. The pair are expected to begin work next week, though viewers won’t see the results of their storytelling immediately because of the show’s production schedule. Their material is expected to begin airing later this fall.
A New Era Begins in Genoa City
The search for Griffith’s successor has been closely watched by fans since news broke that he would be stepping down as head writer. Griffith remained with the series while CBS looked for his replacement, giving the show time to make a smooth creative transition.
Now, that search is over.
Giddens and O’Connor will lead The Young and the Restless together, marking the first time the daytime drama has had co-head writers since Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante shared the position more than a decade ago.
Who Are Jamey Giddens and Dan O’Connor?
Soap fans are likely familiar with both writers, though they arrived at this opportunity by different paths.
Giddens currently writes for Beyond the Gates and previously worked on Days of our Lives and Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem. Before moving into television writing, he became well known throughout the daytime community as the co-founder and editorial director of Daytime Confidential. He is both a Writers Guild of America Award winner and a Daytime Emmy winner, and is also nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards this year for his work on Beyond the Gates and Days.
O’Connor built his daytime career beginning at One Life to Live before joining General Hospital in 2013. During his time there, he served in several creative positions, including associate head writer, breakdown writer and, most recently, co-head writer. Like Giddens, he has earned both Writers Guild of America and Daytime Emmy honors.
What Could It Mean for The Young and the Restless?
While CBS has not announced any story details, the creative direction behind the hiring is becoming clearer.
According to TV Insider, the goal is to recapture the classic storytelling style that helped establish The Young and the Restless as daytime television’s top-rated soap, a position it has held for decades.
That doesn’t necessarily mean immediate changes onscreen. Because episodes are written and produced months before they air, viewers should expect a gradual transition when the new team’s scripts begin reaching television later this fall.
For longtime fans hoping for a fresh creative chapter while still honoring the show’s legacy, this announcement marks one of the biggest behind-the-scenes changes The Young and the Restless has made in years.
