Why Nate Hastings Jr. Is No Longer a Surgeon on The Young and the Restless
For years, Nate Hastings Jr. was known as one of Genoa City’s most respected doctors and one of the country’s top surgeons. For years, Nate dedicated himself to medicine and often put his patients ahead of his own personal life.
However, one devastating confrontation with his cousin Devon Hamilton changed the course of his future forever and ultimately ended his surgical career.
Nate and Elena’s Betrayal

The chain of events began while Nate was working closely with Elena Dawson at a local clinic outside of the hospital. At the time, Elena was in a relationship with Devon. As Elena struggled with insecurities about Devon’s growing bond with Amanda Sinclair, she found comfort in Nate. Their friendship crossed a line, and one night after an emotional day with a patient, the two slept together.
Although Nate developed genuine feelings for Elena, he left it up to her to decide whether to tell Devon the truth. Eventually, Elena confessed the affair to Devon herself, setting off a wave of fallout that would affect everyone involved.
Devon Punches Nate

Devon was devastated by the betrayal. Nate was not only someone he trusted but also a member of his family. When Devon confronted him, emotions quickly escalated.
In a fit of anger, Devon punched Nate. During the altercation, Nate’s hand was cut by broken glass, severely injuring it. What initially appeared to be a painful but temporary injury soon proved to be much more serious.
The damage affected the dexterity and precision in Nate’s hand, skills that are essential for performing surgery. Despite treatment and rehabilitation efforts, Nate learned that he would likely never regain the level of control necessary to continue operating on patients.
Losing the Career He Loved

For Nate, the loss was devastating. Medicine had been more than just a profession — it was Nate’s calling. After years of education, training, and sacrifice, being a surgeon had become a central part of his identity. Suddenly, that future was gone.
Nate struggled with resentment and grief as he tried to come to terms with what had happened. While he acknowledged his role in betraying Devon, he also blamed his cousin for taking away the career he had worked his entire life to build.
The injury widened the rift between the two men and fundamentally changed Nate’s outlook. The compassionate doctor viewers had come to know became more guarded, ambitious, and increasingly drawn toward the corporate world rather than medicine.
Finding a New Purpose

Unable to continue operating, Nate eventually redirected his talents elsewhere. Lily Winters offered him an opportunity to become the public face of AskMDNow, allowing him to remain connected to healthcare in a different capacity.
Over time, Nate expanded his interests into business and executive leadership, eventually becoming involved with Newman Enterprises. His transition from surgeon to businessman marked one of the biggest character shifts in recent Y&R history. Many viewers saw the loss of his medical career as the turning point that changed Nate’s priorities — and personality.
Devon and Nate Reconcile

Despite the bitterness between them, family ultimately helped bring Nate and Devon back together. Both men eventually realized that continuing their feud was hurting the people they loved. They began talking honestly about their pain, regrets, and mistakes.
Devon expressed remorse for letting his anger get the better of him and physically attacking Nate. Nate, in turn, accepted responsibility for betraying Devon’s trust by sleeping with Elena.
The reconciliation did not erase what had happened. Nate never regained his surgical career, and both men carried lasting scars from the ordeal. However, they chose to forgive one another and move forward as family rather than enemies.
