Who Was John Abbott on The Young and the Restless

John Abbott was one of the most important members of Genoa City’s Abbott family on The Young and the Restless. A wealthy businessman, devoted father, longtime Jabot Cosmetics executive, and occasional rival to Victor Newman, John spent decades at the center of some of the show’s biggest family and business stories.

The Abbott patriarch first appeared on The Young and the Restless in 1980, originally played by Brett Halsey. Jerry Douglas took over the role in 1982 and continued playing John until the character’s death in 2006, later returning for appearances as John’s spirit and in flashbacks.

John was born August 1, 1928, and died August 18, 2006, at age 78. He founded Jabot Cosmetics and served as its chairman and CEO, and he was regarded as one of Genoa City’s longtime business and community figures.

John was Robert Abbott’s son and the father of Jack Abbott, Ashley Abbott, Traci Abbott, and Billy Abbott. He raised Jack, Ashley, and Traci largely on his own after his first wife, Dina Mergeron, left the family. The Abbott children were also raised with help from the family’s longtime maid, Mamie Johnson.

For much of John’s life, he believed Ashley was his biological daughter. It was eventually revealed that Ashley had been fathered by Brent Davis, a country club golf pro who had an affair with Dina. John never learned the truth, however, and died believing Ashley was his biological daughter.

John’s relationship with his children was not always easy, particularly with Jack. Father and son frequently clashed over Jabot, business decisions, and their very different approaches to protecting the Abbott legacy. Despite those conflicts, John remained deeply invested in his family and was often the person his children turned to for advice.

Jabot Cosmetics was central to John’s identity. He founded the company and served as its chairman and CEO, making it one of the most important pieces of the Abbott family legacy.

Jabot repeatedly became a battleground between John, Jack, and Victor Newman. Jack’s long-running war with Victor sometimes put Jabot in danger, forcing John to make difficult decisions to keep the family company alive. At one point, Jabot became a public company after Jack’s urging, and Victor Newman gained control, resulting in another major blow to John and the Abbott family.

John was also willing to put family relationships aside when he believed Jabot was at stake. After discovering Jack’s involvement with Jill Foster, for example, John fired his son from Jabot and replaced him with Brad Carlton.

Even after stepping away from the company, John repeatedly returned when Jabot needed him. When Ashley became CEO and Victor’s influence threatened the company, John came out of retirement and took control again.

One of John’s most complicated romances was with Jill Foster, a much younger woman whose relationship with the Abbott family became a source of enormous conflict.

Jack strongly opposed his father’s relationship with Jill, but John married her anyway. The marriage became even more complicated when Jill had an affair with Jack. When John discovered the betrayal, he suffered a stroke and eventually divorced Jill. He also fired Jack from Jabot.

John and Jill eventually found their way back to each other and remarried in 1993. Jill became pregnant with Billy, despite John’s concerns about having another child at his age. John initially struggled with the situation but ultimately grew to love Billy.

The marriage eventually fell apart again after Jill’s affair with Jed Sanders. John won custody of Billy, and father and son eventually left Genoa City for New York.

John’s romantic history extended well beyond Jill. He married Dina, Jill, Jessica Blair, and eventually Gloria Fisher, and Jill became his wife twice. He also had relationships or affairs with women including Katherine Chancellor, Ellen Winters, Joanna Manning, Mamie Johnson, and Gina Roma.

His relationship with Jessica was particularly poignant. Jessica, the mother of Christine “Cricket” Blair, was secretly dying from AIDS when she became involved with John. After learning the truth, John still agreed to marry her. When Jessica’s former husband returned, John stepped aside so Jessica could reunite with her family. He remained among the people who loved her when she died.

John later fell in love with Gloria Fisher, the mother of Michael Baldwin and Kevin Fisher. The relationship initially caused tension with his children, particularly Ashley, who did not trust Gloria. John and Gloria eventually married, although their legal situation became complicated because Gloria’s divorce from Tom Fisher had never been finalized.

John’s final major storyline involved Gloria’s dangerous ex-husband, Tom Fisher. Tom returned to Genoa City and became a threat to the Abbott family, particularly Ashley. Tom also blackmailed Gloria and secretly took money from John under false pretenses. Eventually, John confronted Tom.

During their struggle, John’s gun went off, and Tom was killed. John initially had no memory of what happened because he was involved in a car accident afterward. Ashley even attempted to take responsibility for the killing to protect her father.

Once John recovered his memory, however, he confessed and accepted responsibility for Tom’s death. He was sentenced to seven years in prison. John maintained that he had been protecting his family, but he still accepted the consequences.

John never made it home from prison. While incarcerated, John’s health deteriorated. He experienced periods of confusion and was eventually found to have been overmedicated. Before he could be released early because of his poor health, John suffered a devastating stroke and was left in a vegetative state.

Doctors told the family that John would not recover, and his wishes regarding life support were honored. His children and other loved ones returned to Genoa City to say goodbye. John died on August 18, 2006, with his family and close friends around him.

His death was particularly heartbreaking because John had been only weeks away from receiving a pardon and returning home.

John’s death also sparked another Abbott family battle. His family held a private memorial service, while Gloria wanted a much larger funeral. Jack deliberately gave Gloria the wrong time, causing her to miss the family’s service. She later held a separate gathering with Michael, Lauren, and Kevin.
