The Young and the Restless: Victor’s ‘Night of Debauchery’ Grudge Won’t Die

Victor Newman has never been particularly good at letting things go, but his continued fixation on what he calls Jack Abbott’s “night of debauchery” with his wife in a hotel room has reached a point where it’s difficult to separate his concern for Nikki from his longstanding hatred of Jack.

Victor has used the 2024 incident at the Genoa City Athletic Club as a constant reminder to Jack that he nearly killed Nikki. But the night Victor keeps throwing back at his archenemy was far more complicated than the way Victor remembers it.

What Actually Happened Between Jack and Nikki

In May 2024, Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) had already relapsed when Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) found her at the Athletic Club. She was drinking heavily, blaming herself for everything that had happened with Aunt Jordan (Colleen Zenk) and insisting that she was beyond saving.

Jack initially did exactly what anyone would hope a sponsor and friend would do: he tried to take the alcohol away from her, ordered food and water, cleaned up the room, and encouraged her to go to a meeting and eventually consider rehab. Jack reminded Nikki that she wasn’t responsible for Jordan’s actions and tried to get her to focus on her family instead of continuing to punish herself.

Nikki wasn’t listening. She was deep into her addiction, convinced that she had failed everyone and determined to keep drinking. Eventually, she told Jack that he had failed as her sponsor and that if he really wanted to help her, he would have to understand what she was going through. She told him to either join her or leave, and Jack made the shocking decision to join her.

Jack called a former drug dealer and ordered the same pills he had used in the past, explaining that he wanted to understand the relief Nikki seemed to be getting from drinking and that he needed to put himself in her shoes.

Jack’s Method For The Madness

There was a reason behind what Jack was doing, even though it wasn’t a well-thought-out plan. He wasn’t initially trying to get high with Nikki for fun or because he wanted to hurt her. He believed that if he showed Nikki what it was like to watch someone she loved deliberately put their life in danger, she might finally understand what she was doing to herself.

And for a moment, it seemed as though Jack’s terrible idea might have accomplished what he intended. Nikki suddenly found herself in the position of trying to stop Jack. She begged him not to take the pills, warned him about mixing them with alcohol, and eventually offered to get sober herself if he would stop.

But Jack had made the mistake of crossing the line between demonstrating the danger of addiction and actually relapsing. He continued taking pills and drinking, eventually passing out while Nikki frantically tried to revive him. Paramedics had to administer medication to counteract the opioids.

Jack made an incredibly dangerous decision, and he nearly died because of it. He also had to deal with the consequences of relapsing himself — but there is an important difference between acknowledging that Jack was wrong and rewriting the night as though Jack deliberately set out to endanger Nikki.

Victor Remembers The Relapse, But Not The Circumstances

That is the part Victor seems determined to forget. To Victor, the story begins and ends with Jack taking pills and drinking with Nikki, and because Nikki nearly lost her life, Jack is permanently condemned in Victor’s eyes. But Jack nearly lost his own life that night, too. Nikki was ultimately the person desperately trying to save him, just as Jack had been trying to save her when he first arrived at the room.

Jack doesn’t need anyone to pretend that he was a hero that night; he knows he wasn’t. His decision was reckless, and he knows it — but he is right that had he not shown up when he did, Nikki could have easily drunk herself to death that night.

Victor’s insistence on using that incident as proof that Jack is somehow uniquely dangerous to Nikki ignores the circumstances that led to it and, more importantly, ignores everything that happened between Victor and Jack before and after it. Because Victor didn’t suddenly start hating Jack in May 2024, it’s just been an excuse since the “night of debauchery” to intensify the grudge that has existed for decades.
