Thompson made his Genoa City debut on January 13th, 2016, taking over the character following the departure of Burgess Jenkins. The casting was a significant move for the CBS soap, as Thompson had just wrapped a celebrated 10-year run as Dr. Patrick Drake on General Hospital (and a daunting recast of a popular character, particularly after Billy Miller’s portrayal).

Thompson reflected on the anniversary on Instagram this week, looking back at his first scenes, and acknowledged the weight of the role when he first signed on. He was grateful for the amazing castmates, crew, production, PR, and fans who have been part of his journey in his career.

He humbly noted the kind comments his coworkers had made. “I feel so lucky to be a small part of your journey and to be able to witness you work every week! I’m a huge fan and honored to call you a friend! Congratulations!” Courtney Hope (Sally Spectra) wrote.

The actor’s tenure as the rebellious Abbott has been critically successful. In 2020, Thompson won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for scenes involving Billy’s psychological struggle and the lingering trauma over the death of his daughter, Delia.

Ten years in, Thompson expressed gratitude for the longevity of the role, noting that the business can be fleeting. “I’m glad to be kickin’ it still,” he stated regarding the anniversary.

To the fans, Thompson stated, “It’s literally not possible without you.” He thanked the viewers “for allowing me to play an amazing character who continues to grow and surprise me.”

Thompson grinned as he said how much fun Billy was to play. “Billy Abbott is a little sh–disturber sometimes, but I love him,” Thompson concluded.
