Karla Mosley Reveals What It Really Took to Film Beyond the Gates’ Tornado Crossover
Soap fans are used to seeing weddings, explosions, kidnappings, and dramatic confrontations play out on screen. But according to Beyond the Gates star Karla Mosley, the upcoming tornado crossover with The Young and the Restless required a level of production rarely seen in daytime television.
During a recent interview with The Soap Scene, Mosley pulled back the curtain on what it took to bring the disaster storyline to life.
The Tornado Was a Massive Production

While viewers won’t see the crossover event until it airs beginning June 9th, Mosley said the scale of production immediately stood out to the cast. “They brought in extra cameras and the lighting was amazing, ” she revealed. The production also utilized stunt doubles as the tornado wreaks havoc across Fairmont Crest.
For a daytime drama known for its fast-paced production schedule, the additional resources helped create a larger-than-usual event. Perhaps the most surprising revelation was how long filming lasted. “It took a lot of time — and it was a treat to be able to take so much time,” Mosley said.
According to the actress, filming stretched across several days. “We shot it over the course of three to four days, which is pretty unheard of in our world,” Mosley added. For comparison, daytime productions often move through multiple episodes in a matter of days, making the extended schedule a significant commitment.
Bigger Than a Typical Soap Event

The cast was able to spend considerably more time perfecting scenes than they typically would during a standard production week. The result, according to Mosley, is a crossover that feels broader in scope than many soap viewers may be accustomed to.
Between additional cameras, stunt work, and an extended filming schedule, the tornado episodes represent one of the most ambitious productions Beyond the Gates has undertaken since its debut. While the tornado creates chaos for the characters, Mosley said the production itself was a rewarding experience.
Co-star for the crossover, Bryton James, who plays Devon Hamilton on The Young and the Restless, agreed, and said it was the largest-scaled production he can remember participating in on the soap. Having additional time to develop scenes and work through the action-heavy material allowed the cast and crew to approach the event differently from a typical episode.
For fans eager to see what happens when residents of Fairmont Crest and Genoa City collide during a natural disaster, the behind-the-scenes effort suggests CBS is treating the crossover as one of the biggest daytime events of the year.
