How Did Devon Become a Billionaire on The Young and the Restless?

Devon Hamilton has gone from a teenager living in foster care to one of the wealthiest people in Genoa City. Today, The Young and the Restless character is a billionaire businessman, music executive, and owner of Winters Inc., but Devon did not make his fortune in the traditional way.

Devon’s transformation from foster kid to billionaire began with a shocking discovery about his biological father — and ultimately led to him inheriting billions from the woman he never knew was his grandmother.

So, how did Devon become a billionaire?

When Devon (Bryton James) first arrived in Genoa City in 2004, he was a young teenager who had spent much of his childhood in foster care.

He eventually became close to Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and her parents, Neil and Drucilla Winters (Kristoff St. John and Victoria Rowell). Neil and Drucilla took Devon into their home and eventually adopted him, making him Lily’s brother.

For years, Devon’s family was the Winters family. He had no idea that he was connected to one of Genoa City’s wealthiest families through his biological father — but that changed in 2011.

Devon Discovered Tucker McCall Was His Father

Devon’s biological mother was Yolanda Hamilton (Chene Lawson), who later went by Harmony. His father was a mystery for most of his life. But then came the bombshell: Devon was the biological son of Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John).

Tucker was not just a wealthy businessman. He was the long-lost son of Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), one of the richest and most powerful women in Genoa City. That meant Devon had suddenly gone from having no known connection to the Chancellor fortune to being Katherine’s biological grandson.

The discovery also connected Devon to an entirely different family legacy. He was still Neil Winters’ adopted son and a member of the Winters family, but he was now also a member of the Chancellor family by blood.

Katherine did not immediately know that Devon was her grandson. The truth about Tucker’s identity and Devon’s paternity unfolded around the same period, eventually revealing that Tucker was Katherine’s long-lost son and Devon was Tucker’s son.

Eventually, Katherine and Devon developed a close relationship, which became crucial to Devon’s future. Katherine came to regard him as family — not as the adopted son of her friend Neil Winters, but as her biological grandson. Katherine’s feelings toward Devon would ultimately change his life forever.

Devon Inherited Katherine’s Fortune

When Katherine died in 2013, Devon was stunned to learn that she had left him the bulk of her estate. The inheritance was estimated at approximately $2.475 billion, instantly making Devon one of the wealthiest people in Genoa City.

This is the key to understanding Devon’s billionaire status. He didn’t become a billionaire because his music career suddenly made him enormously wealthy, nor did he inherit the money from Neil Winters. And, perhaps most importantly, he did not receive the fortune through Tucker.

Devon’s billionaire status came primarily from  Katherine Chancellor’s estate itself, and the inheritance completely changed Devon’s circumstances. A young man who had once lived in foster care was suddenly responsible for a fortune worth billions.

The contrast is central to Devon’s character. Katherine gave him the fortune, but Neil gave him a family.

Devon initially struggled with his new wealth. Having money had always been something he associated with other people. Neil Winters was successful, Tucker McCall was wealthy, and Katherine was one of Genoa City’s most powerful businesswomen, but Devon had grown up without that kind of security.

Suddenly, he had more money than he could realistically spend, but the inheritance also made Devon a target. He became increasingly suspicious of the people around him and worried about whether people genuinely cared about him or were interested in his money. His newfound wealth affected his romantic relationships and friendships as well.

Rather than simply sitting on the money, however, Devon eventually began using his fortune to build businesses and support causes that mattered to him.

Long before he inherited Katherine’s fortune, Devon had developed an interest in music. After college, he worked toward a career in the music business and eventually became involved with Tucker McCall’s record label.

Katherine later hired Devon to run her own record label, giving him valuable experience in the business world. That experience mattered because Devon’s career after his inheritance was not simply that of a wealthy heir. He became an entrepreneur and music executive in his own right first.

Music became one of the defining parts of Devon’s professional life, but Devon’s biggest step toward creating his own business legacy came when he went into business with Neil. The pair purchased Mergeron Enterprises from Dina Mergeron and turned it into their own company, initially called Hamilton-Winters.

Neil eventually stepped away, leaving Devon to take greater control of the business. The company expanded beyond music, and Devon demonstrated that he was capable of using his inherited fortune to create and acquire businesses rather than simply living off Katherine’s money. That company eventually evolved into Winters Inc., with Devon as its owner.
