Genie Francis to Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor at 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

Genie Francis is about to reach a remarkable milestone in her General Hospital career, and she will now have another major reason to celebrate.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced September 3 that Francis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Honor at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which will take place October 30 in Hollywood, California.

The honor comes just months before Francis reaches another extraordinary milestone. In February 2027, she will mark 50 years since she first appeared on daytime television as Laura Vining on General Hospital.

Francis was only 14 when she joined the ABC soap in 1977, but Laura quickly became one of daytime television’s most recognizable and enduring characters. Her story with Luke Spencer became one of the defining romances in soap opera history, culminating in their 1981 wedding, which attracted an estimated 30 million viewers.

Nearly five decades later, Laura remains an important part of General Hospital and of Port Charles. The character has evolved from a teenage heroine into a mother, grandmother and mayor, while Francis has remained one of the most recognizable faces associated with the series.

Francis reflected on the significance of the honor and the extraordinary length of her career in a statement released by NATAS.

“I want to offer my deepest gratitude to the leadership of NATAS for honoring me with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” Francis said. “This February marks 50 years since I first portrayed Laura on General Hospital. Stepping onto that set at just 14, I could never have imagined the extraordinary journey that lay ahead.”

The actress also thanked the viewers who have followed her career over the past five decades.

“I am deeply grateful to have been welcomed onto your television screens and into your homes for five decades; for the love, support, and loyalty I’ve been given; and for the privilege of being a small part of your lives,” she said.

Francis added, “My career in daytime television has truly been the adventure of a lifetime, and I am deeply honored by this recognition.”

NATAS President and CEO Adam Sharp also praised Francis for the mark she has made on daytime television.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Genie Francis’s remarkable career,” Sharp said. “From Port Charles and beyond, she has left an indelible mark on the landscape of daytime television, and she continues to tackle bold topics as a courageous storyteller to this day.”

Although Francis is best known for playing Laura on General Hospital, her daytime career has taken her to several other soaps over the years.

She appeared on ABC’s All My Children as Ceara Connor, NBC’s Days of Our Lives as Diana Colville and CBS’s The Young and the Restless as Genevieve Atkinson.

Her work has also extended well beyond daytime television. Francis began acting at age 13 with a guest appearance on Family before taking on roles in projects including the miniseries North and South and Bare Essence. She also appeared in The Note, part of the television movie franchise.

Her television credits include guest appearances on Third Rock From the Sun, Murder, She Wrote, the final episode of Perry Mason, and Roswell.

Francis has also built an extensive stage career, including productions of Crimes of the Heart, the world premiere of Defying Gravity at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the off-Broadway production of The Baby Dance at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, which marked her New York City stage debut.

Francis’ Lifetime Achievement Honor recognizes a career that has been closely tied to the history of the Daytime Emmy Awards themselves.

The Daytime Emmy Awards have recognized outstanding achievements in daytime television since 1974, honoring performers and creative professionals across daytime dramas as well as talk, entertainment news, culinary, instructional, legal, and other programming.

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be held as a single ceremony in 2026 and will be produced by NATAS Productions. Adam Sharp and Lara Gates will serve as executive producers, with Leon Knoles returning as director for the fifth consecutive year.

Tickets for the ceremony are scheduled to go on sale September 9, 2026.

For General Hospital fans, however, the ceremony will mark something bigger than another awards-season celebration. It will be an opportunity to honor an actress whose career is inseparable from one of daytime television’s most iconic characters.

By the time Francis reaches her 50th anniversary on General Hospital in February 2027, Laura’s story will have spanned generations of viewers. Now, Francis will receive one of daytime television’s highest honors as she prepares to celebrate five decades in the role that made her a household name.
