The General Hospital Weekly Rap June 29 – July 6, 2026

Extended Version

Are You Not Entertained?

General Hospital has been on fire for the past couple of weeks, and I, for one, could not have been more entertained. Last week brought the demise of the nefarious WSB Director Ross Cullum and the arrest of the maniacal Jenz Sidwell. It would seem cause for celebration now that the specter of evil was gone, but new truths have come to light and new deceptions were formed, so, as they say, no rest for the weary.

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to John “Z” Oliver

John Oliver takes on his guest role
John Oliver | General Hospital | ABC

Let’s start with the delightfully unexpected…John Oliver, best known as the host of Last Week Tonight, manifested a most magnificent guest role for himself. After hilariously making his guest soap actor aspirations known on his show, the General Hospital writers brilliantly found a way to weave him into the canvas that was both entertaining and actually made sense. Oliver assumed the role of the mysterious Z, head of the WSB. Like many in charge at the WSB, Z’s methods have been revealed to be dubious and self-serving at best.

Oliver strutted off the helicopter as Z, like he was channeling Russell Crowe strutting into the arena to fiercely ask the crowd, “Are you not entertained?!” I can not give enough kudos to the writers for bringing Z to life and to Oliver for deftly leaning into the chaotic beauty of soap operas. The strut, the casual shot of the henchman, the manipulation of Cassius…all of it was perfection. As if that weren’t enough, the argument with the ensuing Carly Spencer slap was, mwah, chef’s kiss!

My new hope is that Oliver will return as Z from time to time, or maybe they could have him communicate with Josslyn through a speaker, as Charlie did in Charlie’s Angels… just throwing the idea out there.

So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye

Cassius and Cullum at Wyndemere
Cassius and Cullum | General Hospital | ABC

It appears that WSB Director Ross Cullum’s (Andrew Hawkes) time at General Hospital has come to an end, and I, for one, am actually going to miss him. While I love the complexity of a morally gray character, sometimes, I just want a true villain — a nefarious being that galvanizes everyone to bring them down. Cullum was cold, calculated, and ill-intentioned. There truly was nothing redeeming about him, and Josslyn should get a key to the city for taking him out. That being said, there aren’t many things that have all the residents of Port Charles seeing eye to eye, so Cullum’s demise leaves a void to fill as a common enemy. Of course, only half of the vortex is dead because Sidwell is in jail but still alive, so who knows what could happen next.

Major props to Andrew Hawkes for giving Bond-villain energy right up to the very end. His portrayal was chilling on a Black Mirror-Twilight Zone level, which, in my humble opinion, is the highest level of creeptastic you can hope for. On the flip side, if you enjoy a good chuckle, do yourself a favor and check out Hawkes’ social media. My personal favorites are his Family’s “Support” and Ross Cullum’s Day Off.

Sidwell Finally Rolled Snake-Eyes

Jenz Sidwell finally spun out and pushed it a step too far. It would seem that he is on his way to a government-funded sleepover in the Pentonville clink, but the Port Charles judicial system doesn’t always work the way you think it should, so who’s to say? Carlo Rota plays Sidwell so delightfully unhinged that it would be a shame to lose the other half of the Sidwell-Cullum Vortex, too.

Side notes: Can you imagine how hard it was for Rota and his real-life wife, Nazneen Contractor (ADA Justine Turner), to keep a straight face in those gallery scenes? Also, check out Rota’s efforts to Free Sidwell.

Chess Anyone?

John Oliver as "Z" talks to Josslyn in her hospital room
John Oliver as “Z” and Josslyn | General Hospital | ABC

It turns out that Josslyn has been playing chess while most everyone else has been playing checkers. Though officially shelved as an agent by Brennan months ago, Josslyn continued to buzz around gathering information. Bit by bit, she put all of the pieces of the puzzle together, tenaciously escaped capture, and eventually put a permanent stop to Cullum. And though now healing from a gunshot wound and surgery, she managed to negotiate the full release of Jason and Valentin. Teamwork does make the dream work, but sometimes you just have to finish the job on your own. Most unfortunately for Carly, Josslyn appears to be really good at her job and is eventually likely to become one of the WSB’s greatest assets. I can’t give Eden McCoy enough love. She is truly such a talent who brings the perfect mix of intelligence, snark, compassion, and general badassery to her character.

Side Note: I was surprised to see Henrik, but I was really surprised to see WSB Agent S. Vaughn. I was hoping they’d have him stick around, but after a sweet conversation with Josslyn, he’s off again.

Cassius Channels His Inner Nathan

I figured Cassius wasn’t actually dead, but I was truly hoping they would find a way to keep him around. Nathan was lovely, honorable, and swoon-worthy, but it has been far more interesting to see Cassius slowly spoon his way out of moral compromise. It seems that walking in Nathan’s shoes had a positive effect on him, as he did the right thing in the end.

Now that Cassius has lived to see another day, I assume he’s going to take Z’s deal and join the WSB, so there is, at least, the future possibility that he will cross paths with Josslyn again and maybe make his way back to his Port Charles family.

Adieu to France & Bonjour to Port Charles

Anna sees peter August in her room at the clinic
Anna and Peter August| General Hospital | ABC

Anna was finally given the feu vert or green light to go home. Unfortunately, it appears that she has not escaped the tenacious grip of Faison just yet, as she received a hallucinatory visit from Henrik Faison (aka Peter August, father of Bailey Lu). How surprised were you to see Henrik (Wes Ramsey) when Anna turned around? I have to admit I did not see it coming! Whether she’ll be able to leave these figments of her imagination behind in France or if they’ll be traveling back to Port Charles with her remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen what purpose her hallucinations serve. Is it to show that Anna is actually having real mental health issues, or is it really to serve as a harbinger to let her know that Faison’s evil reach from the beyond is not done just yet? Whatever it is, I have full faith that my queen will prevail.

In Defense of Lulu Spencer

Britt, Rocco, Lulu, and Dante in Tortola
Britt, Rocco, Lulu, and Dante | General Hospital | ABC

As with a number of the other characters, Lulu has had some insanely bad things happen to her throughout her entire life. Chief among them are the hijacking of, at least, one of her eggs and two embryos, which, of course, resulted in the births of Charlotte and Rocco. I’ll skip the long Lulu history lesson, but suffice it to say, she was robbed of the first seven years of Charlotte’s life and about the first eight months of Rocco’s life. Valentin and Nina could not have treated her any worse after she found out about Charlotte. The same goes for Liesl and Britt after she found out about Rocco. Then came Dante’s absence for a couple of years, and finally the 4-year coma courtesy of an explosion set off by Julian Jerome and induced liver failure courtesy of Cyrus Renaut. My point is, Girly has had it rough, and life post-miraculous coma recovery has not seemed to get much easier.

This past year, Britt and Liesl have somehow felt entitled to be a part of Rocco’s life and, to add insult to injury, Rocco agreed – despite the fact that all of his recent troubles really are a result of his proximity to Britt. And, Valentin struts in and out with the full confidence that Charlotte would choose him if given the option, despite what may actually be best for her. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all soapalicious, and I generally quite like the characters of Britt, Liesl, and Valentin more than Lulu, but commmmmme onnnnn. I’ve seen many in the GH fandom slam Lulu, but please tell me what mother in their right mind would want Britt and Liesl in their child’s life, or would overlook Valentin’s considerable risk factors. You could wallpaper the Quartermaine mansion with the list of their collective crimes. I’m a forgiving person, but grace has its limits. I’m just saying that if you mess with my ovaries, embryos, kids, and their safety, you really shouldn’t expect to have free access to my family or expect a hospitable invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. But, hey, maybe that’s just me.

Bottom Line: Yes, Mama Lulu needs to polish her edges, but she really does deserve a break and maybe even a spa week at a fancy resort. I hear the Five Poppies is rebuilding.

And Now This

Much to Carly's surprise, Valentin is back and free
Carly and Valentin | General Hospital | ABC

Carly & Valentin’s parking lot reunion, complete with a running kiss, was a surprise bonus. And the looks of pure bewilderment on Sonny, Lulu, and Charlotte’s faces were priceless. There will be fallout (honestly, as there should be) and there will be issues, but I love these two and want more!

Congresswoman Willow Cain’s life of lies has been on the verge of imploding for a while, but to this point, she has managed to stay one step ahead. However, with Cullum gone and Sidwell arrested, what is going to happen to Officer Chase’s almost-paramour? Will Jack Brennan continue to help her, especially since it looks like his interest in her mother, Nina, is about to spike? Will Sidwell continue to blackmail her from prison? And, since he can’t pass her the paralytic drug through the plexiglass window in the Pentonville visitors’ room, how is she going to continue to keep Drew silent? Will Detective Fitzpatrick pay Drew another visit and, if so, will Drew continue to blink his revenge by literally giving false eyewitness testimony? Truly, there are so many ways Willow can be made to pay for her transgressions, and frankly, it’s really about time.
