General Hospital Reaches 16,000 Episodes, Celebrating a Historic Milestone With Big Returns and New Beginnings
There are television milestones, and then there is General Hospital.
The iconic ABC soap reaches an incredible 16,000 episodes today, Monday, July 13, a feat few series in television history can match. More than 63 years after first welcoming viewers to Port Charles, the daytime drama continues to make history while introducing new stories for longtime fans and new audiences alike.
To commemorate the achievement, the cast, crew, and creative team gathered at The Prospect Studios in Los Angeles on June 1 for a special cake-cutting celebration honoring the show’s latest landmark.
The milestone episode itself is packed with moments that reflect both the past and the future of General Hospital. Steve Burton returns as Jason Morgan, one of the show’s most beloved characters, while Anna Devane and Valentin Cassadine share an emotional reunion. The episode also welcomes a new face to Port Charles as Dean Geyer makes his debut as surgeon Dr. Tristan Roberts.
The combination of familiar favorites and fresh arrivals makes the 16,000th episode more than just a celebration of the show’s history — it also sets the stage for the stories still to come.
A Record-Breaking Legacy

Now in its 64th year, General Hospital remains the longest-running scripted American drama and the longest-running American soap opera still in production. Since premiering in 1963, generations of viewers have watched the lives, loves, triumphs, and tragedies unfold in Port Charles, helping the series become one of the defining programs in daytime television.
Its longevity has been matched by critical acclaim. General Hospital has won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Drama a record 18 times, more than any other daytime serial.
Created by Frank and Doris Hursley, the series continues under executive producer Frank Valentini, with Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten serving as co-head writers.
Looking Ahead

While milestone episodes naturally invite reflection, General Hospital continues to look forward. Jason Morgan’s return immediately reshapes the canvas, Anna and Valentin’s reunion rekindles one of the show’s most popular pairings, and Dr. Tristan Roberts arrives just as General Hospital welcomes another physician to its ever-evolving staff.
After 16,000 episodes, General Hospital continues to prove that there are still plenty of stories left to tell in Port Charles.
