The Complete History of John and Marlena on Days of Our Lives (1986-1998)

When discussing the greatest romances in the history of Days of Our Lives, no couple has been more closely associated with the show’s success than John Black and Marlena Evans. Their love story dominated much of the late 1980s and 1990s, driving storylines that remain among the most memorable in daytime television. What began as a mystery involving an unidentified amnesiac evolved into a complicated saga involving mistaken identity, family betrayal, devastating loss, adultery, paternity scandals, demonic possession, and one of the most infamous villains Salem has ever known.

By the end of the 1990s, John and Marlena had become one of the defining supercouples of daytime television. Getting there, however, required overcoming nearly every obstacle imaginable.

The Pawn Arrives in Salem

John first appeared in Salem in 1986 under mysterious circumstances. Known initially only as “The Pawn,” he had no memory of his identity and little understanding of how he had arrived in Salem. Years of captivity and brainwashing had left him with fragmented memories and unanswered questions. Those circumstances were eventually tied to Stefano DiMera, whose influence would loom over John’s life for decades.

At the time, Marlena Evans was grieving the apparent death of her husband, Roman Brady. Roman had disappeared years earlier and was believed dead, leaving Marlena to raise Sami and Eric alone.

As John searched for answers, evidence gradually emerged suggesting that he might actually be Roman. The possibility gained credibility as memories surfaced and familiar faces recognized him. Marlena found herself drawn to the mysterious stranger, first as a psychiatrist trying to help him recover his memories and later as a woman beginning to believe her husband had somehow returned.

Eventually, John was accepted as Roman Brady. For Marlena, it felt like a miracle. The husband she thought she had lost forever had come home. For John, it provided an identity, a family, and a future, but neither realized that the truth was far more complicated.

Rebuilding a Family

For several years, John lived as Roman Brady and resumed life with Marlena. Together, they rebuilt their marriage and attempted to provide stability for Sami and Eric. The family faced numerous threats, many of them connected to Stefano DiMera, but they remained united.

These years were significant because the emotional bond between John and Marlena became real. Even though John’s identity was based on misinformation, the love they developed was genuine.

Sami and Eric also came to view John as their father. His role in raising them would continue to influence both characters long after the truth about Roman emerged.

At the time, neither John nor Marlena had any reason to question the future they were building together.

Marlena’s Plane Crash and Presumed Death

In 1987, tragedy struck when Marlena was presumed dead in a plane crash. The loss devastated John. Having already experienced years of uncertainty and confusion about his identity, he now found himself mourning the woman he loved.

Unknown to everyone in Salem, Marlena had actually survived. She spent years in a coma, unable to return to her family. During her absence, John’s life began moving in a different direction.

Isabella Toscano Changes Everything

One of the most important chapters in John’s history began when he met Isabella Toscano.

Isabella arrived in Salem carrying secrets of her own, including concerns about her health. As she and John grew closer, a genuine romance developed.

For many viewers, Isabella represented the first major challenge to John and Marlena’s growing popularity. While Marlena remained absent, John found happiness with someone else. Their relationship deepened significantly, and Isabella eventually became pregnant with John’s child.

The birth of Brady Black permanently altered the course of John’s life. Becoming Brady’s father gave John a new sense of purpose and created another branch of the family that would remain central to Days of Our Lives for decades.

However, happiness proved short-lived. Isabella was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and eventually died in 1992. Her death remains one of the most emotional losses in DAYS’ history. John was devastated. Once again, he found himself mourning the woman he loved while attempting to raise a child on his own.

The Real Roman Brady Returns

Shortly after Isabella’s death came one of the biggest twists in DAYS history. The real Roman Brady returned to Salem.

The revelation shattered everything John believed about himself. The man everyone thought was Roman Brady was not Roman at all. Instead, he had been brainwashed into believing he was someone else while the real Roman had spent years imprisoned.

Suddenly, John lost not only his identity but also his place within the Brady family. For Marlena, the situation was equally painful. The husband she had mourned had truly returned. At the same time, the man she had spent years loving was still standing in front of her.

Initially, Marlena chose to reunite with Roman. John attempted to move forward, but neither he nor Marlena could fully ignore what still existed between them.

Friendship Becomes Something More

Following Isabella’s death and Roman’s return, John and Marlena slowly found their way back into each other’s lives. Marlena struggled with lingering feelings for John while trying to rebuild her marriage to Roman. John found himself unable to forget Marlena despite his efforts to respect her marriage.

The emotional tension between them became increasingly difficult to ignore. Eventually, their friendship crossed a line.

The Affair That Changed Salem

The affair between John and Marlena became one of the defining stories of the early 1990s. Unlike many soap affairs built on impulse, this relationship grew from years of shared experiences and unresolved emotions. Nevertheless, the consequences were devastating.

Roman was betrayed by both his wife and the man he considered family, but no one was more affected than Sami Brady. Sami accidentally discovered John and Marlena together and became obsessed with exposing the affair. Feeling abandoned and betrayed by her mother, she launched a campaign to destroy the relationship.

Many of Sami’s future actions can be traced directly back to the emotional damage caused during this period. The affair ultimately transformed multiple families and permanently altered the Brady family dynamic.

Belle’s Paternity and Sami’s Revenge

The situation became even more explosive when Marlena became pregnant. Initially, Roman believed he was the father of baby Belle.

Unknown to everyone else, Sami secretly tampered with paternity evidence in an effort to preserve her parents’ marriage. She desperately wanted Roman and Marlena to stay together and viewed John as the reason her family was falling apart.

For months, the truth remained hidden, but eventually, it was revealed that John was Belle’s biological father. The revelation ended any possibility of reconciliation between Roman and Marlena and firmly established John and Marlena as a family.

Belle Black would become one of Salem’s most important next-generation characters, but her birth was rooted in one of the most controversial stories in the show’s history. The fallout also deepened Sami’s resentment toward both John and Marlena, creating tensions that would last for years.

Marlena’s Possession

In 1994, Days of Our Lives launched one of the most famous and controversial storylines in daytime history, when Marlena became possessed by the devil.

What began as unusual behavior gradually escalated into a supernatural nightmare. Marlena exhibited disturbing personality changes, impossible physical abilities, and increasingly frightening behavior that left Salem searching for answers. The storyline generated enormous publicity and remains one of the most recognizable plots in soap opera history.

Throughout the ordeal, John never stopped fighting for Marlena. While many questioned whether she could be saved, John remained determined to bring her back. His devotion became one of the emotional anchors of the story.

The eventual exorcism and Marlena’s recovery reinforced the strength of their bond and elevated the couple to an entirely new level of popularity. For many viewers, this storyline permanently cemented John and Marlena as Days of Our Lives’ signature supercouple.

Priest John and a New Direction

Following the possession storyline, John experienced another major shift in his life. Believing he had received a religious calling, he entered the priesthood. The decision created new complications for his relationship with Marlena. Although their feelings for one another remained strong, John’s commitment to the church created a significant obstacle.

The storyline reflected John’s ongoing search for identity and purpose, themes that had defined his character since arriving in Salem. Ultimately, however, his connection to Marlena proved stronger than the life he was attempting to build as a priest.

Kristen Blake Enters the Picture

Just as John and Marlena seemed poised to build a future together, another complication emerged. Kristen Blake arrived in Salem and initially formed a close friendship with Marlena. Intelligent, compassionate, and seemingly trustworthy, Kristen quickly became part of Marlena’s circle.

At the same time, John and Marlena continued facing fallout from the affair, Belle’s paternity revelation, and ongoing family tensions. During one of their many periods of uncertainty, John grew close to Kristen.

Unlike many romantic rivals in Salem, Kristen’s feelings for John initially appeared genuine. Their relationship developed into a serious romance, and John eventually proposed marriage. For a time, it seemed possible that John’s future might be with Kristen rather than Marlena.

The relationship became even more serious when Kristen became pregnant. However, everything changed when she suffered a miscarriage. Terrified that John would leave her if he learned the truth, Kristen concealed the loss. What began as a desperate attempt to save her relationship soon evolved into one of the most elaborate deceptions in Days of Our Lives history.

As Kristen became increasingly determined to hold on to John, her friendship with Marlena deteriorated into a bitter rivalry. The woman who had once been Marlena’s confidante became one of the greatest threats John and Marlena would ever face.

The storyline eventually introduced Susan Banks, a lookalike whose life became entangled with Kristen’s schemes. The deception grew increasingly complicated as Kristen manipulated multiple people in an effort to keep John away from Marlena. At the center of the chaos was a baby everyone believed belonged to John.

The child, eventually revealed to be Elvis Aaron DiMera, became one of the most important characters in future Days history. Years later, Baby Elvis would grow up to become EJ DiMera.

The revelation exposed the full extent of Kristen’s deception and finally brought many of her schemes crashing down. Although John and Marlena spent much of the late 1990s battling Kristen’s manipulations, the ordeal also demonstrated the resilience of their relationship.

Every attempt to separate them ultimately failed. By the end of 1998, they had survived mistaken identities, devastating losses, affairs, paternity scandals, possession, religious vows, and one of Salem’s most obsessive villains.

The next phase of their story would focus on marriage, family, and new challenges that threatened to destroy everything they had fought so hard to build.
