Y&R’s Bryton James Reveals Devon and Dani’s Connection Was Intentional on Beyond the Gates

Fans who noticed a spark between Dani Dupree and Devon Winters during the first crossover between The Young and the Restless and Beyond the Gates may have been wondering whether it was simply a nod to Karla Mosley’s Y&R history — or something more. The Soap Scene asked the pair about it during a recent interview and got the behind-the-scenes details.

Devon and Dani’s Connection Was No Accident

According to Bryton James, who plays The Young and the Restless’ Devon Winters, the connection between his character and Karla Mosley’s Dani Dupree on Beyond the Gates was very much intentional.

“They specifically wanted to establish that Dani and Devon had met before and had some sort of history,” James revealed. “Then leave the imagination of the audience to fill in the rest.”

The actor stopped short of revealing whether the relationship will evolve further but admitted he’s hopeful viewers will learn more. “I’m hoping we see more of an evolution of it and learn more,” he told The Soap Scene.

What About Abby and Andre?

The actor noted that the fact that his character was married at the time didn’t stop the flirtation between the two. In fact, the scene could have taken a turn when Devon’s wedding ring was almost forgotten when his costume was packed before he left for Atlanta to film. Luckily, James grabbed it from the drawer before leaving and prevented any eagle-eyed fans from wondering if he and Abby (Melissa Ordway Gaston) had issues viewers had yet to see.

This time around, the historic BTG/Y&R crossover event this week will also allow both characters to meet one another’s significant others. During the first crossover, Devon’s interactions with Dani were largely limited to discussions surrounding Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) and a possible record deal. The upcoming event appears poised to expand those connections as the worlds of Genoa City and Fairmont Crest become increasingly intertwined.

Whether the writers choose to revisit the chemistry between Dani and Devon remains to be seen, but James made it clear that their initial meeting was designed to establish a foundation rather than serve as a one-off crossover moment.
