The Bold and the Beautiful Family Trees: Behind The Feuds, The Spencers and Forrester Have Always Mixed
The Forresters may be warning now that Spencers and Forresters don’t belong together on The Bold and the Beautiful, but that’s only true some of the time. Bill Spencer has always feuded with the First Family of Fashion, Ridge has repeatedly declared that Spencer men only bring trouble, and nearly every generation has insisted history won’t repeat itself. But it always does.
In fact, the Spencer family tree and that of the Forresters have been romantically linked since The Bold and the Beautiful premiered in 1987. What started with Ridge Forrester and Caroline Spencer has grown into one of the show’s biggest generational cycles, producing marriages, children, bitter rivalries, and some of the series’ most unforgettable love triangles.
It All Started With Ridge Forrester and Caroline Spencer

Long before Bill Spencer Jr. (Don Diamont) arrived in Los Angeles, it was Caroline Spencer (Joanna Johnson) who became the first Spencer to fall for a Forrester.
Caroline was the beloved daughter of media mogul Bill Spencer Sr. (Jim Storm), who wanted nothing to do with Ridge Forrester (then-Ronn Moss). He believed Ridge would break Caroline’s heart, and he fought the relationship every step of the way.
Caroline ignored her father’s objections because Ridge was the love of her life. Although they had their ups and downs (like another Spencer-Forrester pairing when Caroline married Ridge’s brother, Thorne), it was Ridge she truly loved until her heartbreaking death from leukemia.
Their romance became one of the defining stories of the show’s early years and set the stage for a rivalry between the two families that has lasted nearly four decades.
Bill Spencer Jr. Brought the Feud Into a New Generation

When Bill Spencer Jr. arrived years later, he wasn’t interested in making peace. Following his father’s dying wish, Bill targeted the Forrester family in both business and love.
Bill’s pursuit of (and affair with) Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) eventually turned a family rivalry into something much more personal, creating one of the most controversial relationships in the show’s history.
Like Father, Like Sons

If Ridge and Caroline began the cycle, Liam Spencer (Scott Clifton) made sure it continued. Liam fell in love with Steffy Forrester, married her, divorced her, remarried her, and continued bouncing between Steffy and Hope Logan for years.
Together, Liam and Steffy welcomed daughter Kelly Spencer, permanently tying the Spencer and Forrester bloodlines together.
Bill’s other son wasn’t immune either. Wyatt Spencer (Darin Brooks) also became romantically involved with Steffy and even married her, meaning both Spencer brothers have been husbands to the same Forrester daughter.
Caroline Spencer’s Legacy Lives On Through Douglas

History repeated itself in perhaps the most surprising way.
Karen Spencer named her daughter Caroline after her late twin sister. That second Caroline Spencer eventually became involved with both Ridge Forrester and Thomas Forrester (Matthew Atkinson) before giving birth to Douglas Forrester.
Douglas now represents another permanent branch connecting both legendary families with an added bonus of a Logan branch, as Hope Logan legally became his adoptive mother while married to Thomas after Caroline’s death.

Why the Spencer-Forrester Rivalry Never Ends

Business may have started the feud, but love has kept it alive. Every generation insists the two families shouldn’t mix, but every generation also proves otherwise.
From Ridge and Caroline’s tragic romance to Liam and Steffy’s never-ending love story, the Spencer and Forrester family trees have become so intertwined that separating them is almost impossible.
Nearly 40 years after Bill Spencer Sr. warned his daughter away from Ridge, the next generations continue making the very same choices. And in some cases, it wasn’t because of family interference or company politics; some actually kept their vows, and it was till death did they part.
