Beyond the Gates Summary for the Week of May 18–22: Derek Dies, Doug Returns, Samantha Crowned at Cotillion

TL;DR: In last week’s Beyond the Gates recap, tragedy struck as Derek died in the warehouse shootout while Samantha was crowned Platinum Deb at the cotillion. And the week ended on a shocking twist when Doug, who was thought to be dead, reappeared.

Beyond the Gates Summary for the Week of May 18–22

This week on Beyond the Gates, the males and females of the extended Dupree family met separately to get ready for the cotillion, with Samantha presenting herself at a group event at the Dupree mansion. As Samantha moved forward to make her début, Chessy tried to trip her, but a late Donnell caught her in time. After Jessica allowed herself a moment of rebellion during the ceremony, her father declared her an embarrassment, which prompted her to ask Tyrell to leave with her so they could make love for the first time.

Deanna arrived to announce which debutante would be awarded Platinum Deb — at first it seemed Chessy was the victor, and Anastasia made a spectacle of herself endowing her granddaughter with the traditional crown and sash. However, Donnell learned that a drunken Nathan had switched cards, not even spelling Francesca’s name right. The real Platinum Deb was Samantha, and Chessy, tired of Anastasia’s antics, handed over the sash and crown to her rival herself. Deanna almost made peace with Vanessa until she saw Donnell wearing Joey’s cufflinks; she steamed that Joey had taken them both in.

The Plasma Ring Investigation Turns Deadly

Awaiting the plasma ring VIPs at the warehouse, Jacob learned that The Impaler was thinking of moving the operation out of D.C. because there was too much of a spotlight on Garland Memorial. Having to make his delivery to the higher-ups, Grayson asked Ashley to handle his and his mother’s affairs if something were to happen to him. Lia pressured Derek to be more accommodating to Grayson at the clinic, but Derek caught Grayson stealing plasma from the facility’s refrigerated stockpile. Grayson swore to Derek that Ashley would be in danger if he didn’t let him make his drop.

Jacob was stunned when he discovered Derek in the warehouse — Derek had followed Grayson after his words about Ashley. Derek hid as instructed and watched as Ren demanded that “Rashad” kill Grayson for being an informant. Jacob instead pulled his gun on Ren and was in the process of arresting him when one of Ren’s henchmen snuck up behind Jacob. Derek rushed the assailant and got shot, saving Jacob, Lia, and Grayson.

Ashley was horrified when Derek was wheeled into the hospital; on his way to surgery, Derek told Ashley that he loved her. Seeing the in-custody Lia, who had been brought to Garland for her own injury, Ashley had to be held back from attacking her. The reunited Jacob and Naomi, plus Shanice and Ashley, all sobbed when Derek died on the operating table.

Ashley, Jacob, and Andre Struggle With the Fallout

Jacob was upset that his undercover assignment hadn’t ended with the capture of The Impaler; Ren bragged that his knowledge of the man would result in a plea deal, so Jacob wanted to use information from Grayson and Lia instead. Lia, who had lost her medical license, was unable to help Jacob as she didn’t know who The Impaler was.

Naomi and Jan couldn’t stop Ashley from blaming herself for Derek’s death. Likewise, Andre felt that Derek would still be alive had he not interfered in his relationship with Ashley. When Grayson tried to explain how he’d gotten caught up in the plasma ring, Ashley ordered him out, saying it was his fault that Derek had been killed. Ashley was surprised to receive comfort from both Andre and Dani.

Trouble Brews at Garland and Fairmont Crest

With Lia no longer chief of staff at Garland, Ted recommended Nicole for the position, but Anita and Vernon suspected Ted had done so to score points with his ex-wife. Kat was certain that the reason Lynette was missing was because Lia had killed her as revenge for stealing her retirement fund.

Hayley gave Bill supposedly real details about her pre-Fairmont Crest life in Philadelphia, then inflicted him with another dose of poison while pushing for him to take her to St. Bart’s.

Joey Faces Questions About the Warehouse Shooting

With the warehouse shootout all over the news, Vanessa asked Joey if he’d had anything to do with it. He denied involvement but cited the incident as the reason he didn’t want her too close to his businesses. Then, Joey called Randy and directed him to tell The Impaler to back off, since his actions were affecting Joey’s turf.

It dismayed Vanessa when Donnell began to side with Deanna about Joey in light of the shooting. After Deanna overheard Vanessa badmouthing her, Vanessa refused to let Deanna humiliate her in public again and walked out on her. Joey defended himself to Donnell, who was not only unsure of Joey’s integrity, but in need of clarification as to what had happened with Doug the night he had died. Deanna was floored when she came across Doug at the country club.

What To Watch

With Derek gone, Ashley devastated, and The Impaler still out there, the fallout from the warehouse shooting is only beginning. Meanwhile, Joey’s secrets continue to pile up, and Doug’s shocking appearance could turn everything upside down yet again.
