What Happened on Beyond the Gates
Ted went to Kat’s and invited her to Thanksgiving dinner, but she thought he was out of his mind when she found out he thought she could break bread with Eva without stabbing her. Ted just wanted to create some good memories for them.
Kat said, for just a moment, she thought he wanted to spend the holidays with her because she was the most important to him, but she had to accept she would always be second best from now on. Kat said she couldn’t prevent a relationship between Ted and Eva, even though it meant she didn’t matter.
Ted told Kat that he understood her and loved her dearly. Kat said if he did, he’d know how much all of it had destroyed her. She decided to choose herself and not share the holiday with Eva.
At the country club, Bill took Tomas for lunch and told him he was impressed with his work and loyalty. He asked Tomas to fill in for him while he was in St. Barts with Hayley at their new vacation home.
Bill told Tomas he wanted him to focus on becoming a partner by being family-oriented. Bill explained he didn’t want lawyers at the firm to make his mistakes and be in a committed relationship, as it’s the type of person that clients trust.
Across the restaurant, Dani returned from her trip and told Anita and Nicole that she had canceled the Forrester job and chosen her marriage instead. Anita was happy for her, but Nicole questioned why she was giving up her career for her relationship again.
Dani said she felt good about making decisions for herself and her career, unlike the past where Bill and agents controlled her. She realized that Andre was making sacrifices for her, and other modelling opportunities would come along. Dani announced she was in love.
Anita and Nicole were surprised that Dani was open to love again after Bill. Dani told them Bill called her on her honeymoon to ask if he could be the emcee at Winterfest.
At the country club gym cafe, Eva saw Izaiah, who’d just finished working out. As Izaiah is telling her how into he was, he leaned in for a kiss but behind them, someone cleared their throat. They turned to see Ted.
Eva introduced Izaiah to Ted, who remembered him from Jacob and Naomi’s wedding and the scene he’d had with his dad. Eva told her dad that Izaiah had changed and was a counselor at Banneker. Ted asked to speak to his daughter alone, so Izaiah let them be.
Ted told Eva that he wanted to make up for lost time and spend Thanksgiving with her but she reluctantly had to decline. She explained that she’d promised her mom to spend it with her, and since the holiday was all about family, she didn’t have the heart to tell her no.
Ted left, and Izaiah came back. He and Eva were talking but Izaiah got a call from Jacob asking about his Thanksgiving plans. Izaiah said it would be more pleasant chilling on his couch than getting into another fight with their dad.
Jacob said Elon missed Izaiah, although he doesn’t show it. Jacob told him to spend the holiday with him and Naomi at the country club with the Duprees instead; Izaiah said he’d think about it.
After his call, Izaiah told Eva that he doesn’t have the connection with his family that she does. He noted that all the interruptions were preventing them from having their first date. He suggested they reconvene after Thanksgiving, but he gave her a kiss to hold them over.
At the police station, Jacob got on Marcel’s nerves, asking too many questions about cases he would like closed before retiring, namely proving that Leslie ran down Laura.
Elon noted that Izaiah turned down his mother’s invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. Jacob told him that he and Naomi would come for dessert and football after they had dinner with the Duprees.
Jacob noted to Elon that Izaiah doesn’t come around because he doesn’t feel wanted by Elon. Jacob said he’d talk to his brother about it, but asked if his dad missed Izaiah. Elon noted that Luke was in Detroit and had offered to take the Thanksgiving shift so coworkers with families could take the time off.
Eva and Leslie met at Uptown. They talked about Thanksgivings past and how this year it would just be the two of them at Orphey Gene’s, and hoped it would be just as good as other memories.
After Eva left, Marcel came in. He got Leslie’s attention by seemingly hitting on her, but she recognized him as a cop. Marcel joined her, and they bonded over their disdain of Jacob. Leslie admitted he was trying to get her arrested, but Marcel said the guy goes after anyone who doesn’t live up to his standards.
Marcel said he didn’t want to talk about work. Leslie told him that she used to be a bartender, so she was a good listener. Marcel began telling her about himself as a single man, as his wife wanted a divorce, and he was alone for Thanksgiving. Marcel lamented that he was retiring, and if he granted his wife the divorce, she could take half of everything, including his dream of sailing around the Caribbean.
When talking about relationships, Leslie noted his wife sounded like someone else she knew who pushed her husband aside. She said she’d change her mind if she saw Marcel with someone like her on his arm. Leslie mentioned she was involved with a doctor, but after hearing Marcel’s story, she mentioned sunbathing on the deck of his yacht. Marcel asked about her boyfriend, but she said that unless he made a commitment, she was available. As Leslie and Marcel toasted one another, Ted walked in and spotted them.
Leslie noted that the doctor she’d told him about had arrived so she had to go. Before walking away, she made sure to tell Marcel she was very rich. Leslie went to the bar, where Ted was. He told her that he wanted to spend Thanksgiving with Eva and suggested the three of them have dinner at Orphey Gene’s, and he would buy.
Kat comes to the country club and sees Nicole in the lobby. She told her mom that Ted wanted to have Thanksgiving with her and Eva, and complained about it. To her surprise, Nicole said she thought it was a good idea as Ted showing love to Eva didn’t diminish his love for Kat.
Kat was upset that her mom didn’t back her up. She rephrased it to seem like Nicole didn’t want her around for Thanksgiving. Kat said she’d spend the holiday in the gym, but with her luck, Eva would appear on the treadmill next to her.
Kat then saw Tomas and told him a slightly different version of her conversation. She told Tomas that she was really trying to go along to get along so when Ted asked her to spend the holiday with him and Eva, she was considering it. However, when she saw Nicole, she also wanted to spend Thanksgiving with her, and now she felt torn between her parents.
Tomas said that he had a solution: he asked Kat to spend Thanksgiving weekend with him at a bed and breakfast. Kat was happy he wanted to spend his time with him and only him. Tomas noted that they were getting serious and he wanted everyone to know it, so he asked her to tell her parents about their plan.
Nicole returned to the table with Anita and Dani. She told them about the situation with Kat, Ted, and Eva, and reiterated her opinion. Anita agreed that Kat would always have a special place in Ted’s heart.
Bill approached the Dupree women’s table, asking Dani if they could continue their conversation about Winterfest. Anita let him know he was only involved at Dani’s insistence. Bill’s face soured when Dani thought it was a good time to tell everyone how happy it made her to talk about her marriage and how she and Andre were on their way to happily ever after.
