Beyond the Gates Recap May 29: Jacob Struggles With Guilt, as the Duprees Try to Have Privacy

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Martin and Kat are shell-shocked when they each interrupt their Grands’ attempt at intimacy, Jacob struggles with guilt about Derek’s death, Vanessa starts clearing out Doug’s things, and Joey gets a call that The Impaler wants a meeting.

Beyond the Gates Recap May 29

In the club lobby, Martin caught up with Vanessa and thanked her for getting Donnell to be Samantha’s escort at the cotillion. Vanessa and Martin talked about what happened the night of that celebration across town.

Martin and Vanessa agreed that it was a good reminder to hold space for people they loved because you never know what tomorrow holds. 

Anita and Vernon Try to Have Some Intimacy

At the Dupree mansion, Anita and Vernon were getting frisky when Kat walked in. Horrified, she bolted, making them laugh. They got the mood back and started getting frisky again, but Martin burst through the door.

Anita offered to wait upstairs for Vernon, but he wasn’t having it. For once, he was fine with telling Martin he’d have to wait and they could talk another time. Martin took his cue and left.

Anita suggested they lock the door, but Vernon had a better idea and got them a room at the club, which was filled with candles when they walked in. Vernon put the do not disturb sign on the door before they got started this time.

Martin, Kat, and Chelsea Compare Notes

Kat met Chelsea at Uptown and told her what happened. Chelsea thought it good that at least the Grands still had their fire. A shell-shocked Martin arrived and told them he was at the Grands, and they had no idea what he had almost walked in on.

Kat assured him she knew exactly and said that Anita and Vernon were going at it like a deb and her escort after cotillion. “You have no idea. It’s been a long week,” Martin quipped. They ordered doubles.

Martin shared that Tyrell lost his virginity after the cotillion and then revealed that Smitty was the one who tipped off Jacob about the plasma ring. Chelsea and Kat were shocked to find out Smitty had been working with Jacob all along.

Kat recalled seeing Jacob and Smitty at the club bar one night and assumed it was related. 

Joey Is Tired Of Being Accused

Joey asked Bill to come to the casino to talk to him about the plasma ring and how Elon was eyeing him over it. Bill basically implied that everyone thought Joey was the Impaler and wondered why he thought anyone would tolerate it. While they talked, Joey noticed Bill’s fingers glitching uncontrollably but said nothing.

After Bill left, Vanessa returned. She told Joey about Derek’s service and that she was expanding the intern scholarship program. Joey thought that was a great idea, although he was aware that it didn’t dismiss the feelings of loss.

Vanessa told Joey that Jacob had her shook when he asked if she was at the service on Joey’s behalf, like he pulled her strings. Vanessa said she trusted that Joey had nothing to do with the warehouse, but Jacob gave her a message.

“Tell Joey I won’t stop until I get every man or woman responsible for Derek’s death,” Vanessa shared. Joey knew it was a big ask for her to accept that he couldn’t tell her everything, but he maintained he wasn’t the Impaler.

Vanessa is Ready to Move On

Vanessa said the fresh grief made her realize she was carrying around her own for Doug. She’s emptied Doug’s locker at the club before coming over. She said that when she saw his lucky 4-leaf clover keychain, she lost it. 

Vanessa didn’t want to stop and was going to do the same at the house. Joey offered to help but Vanessa felt she needed to do it on her own. She said if it was too much for her, she would call him. Joey told her to let time and him help her and eventually she will feel better.

As they went to make some drinks, Joey got a call from Randy, letting him know that the Impaler wanted a meeting. 

Lesley Looks For An Ally

At the club, Leslie saw Hayley and invited herself to join her at her table. She asked if Lynette was still in town, then told Hayley that she knew she was playing a long game but just hadn’t gotten caught yet.

Hayley told Leslie she respected her performance since winning her inheritance, but they being sisters wasn’t going to happen. Leslie took Hayley’s phone and paired it so she’d have her contact info. She reminded Hayley she was an Articulette by birth and Joey Armstrong’s business partner. She said you never know, Hayley might need someone dead one day.
“Oh, hey, Bill,” Leslie said with a big smile as he approached with perfect timing. “Not today, Satan,” Bill snapped. Leslie made herself scarce, and Bill joined his wife. He told Hayley about the hand tremors he’s been having.

Hayley thought it was probably due to the stress of the undercover operation and finding out how involved Jacob had been. She thought they should get it checked out anyway, but said she would take care of him until they did.

Jacob Comes Home

At home, Naomi told Jacob how relieved she was to have him home and embraced him. Jacob raved that thinking about Naomi was what got him through the undercover operation, but she stopped him from praising her.

Naomi explained that she prided herself on her client-attorney secrecy, but when it came to Jacob, her fear overtook her and she made a dozen missteps that could’ve given him away. “What if I had said something in front of Lia?” she cried.

Jacob hated that she had to lie to her family but understood the pressure, noting that he was a trained professional so he could handle it better. Naomi suggested they break the burner phone into a hundred pieces to symbolize it all being over.

Jacob Shares His Real Feelings

Jacob cried as he told a tearful Naomi that he kept hearing the gunshot that was meant for him. He said he let him into the warehouse while he was manning the door for the cavalry to come in, and he shouldn’t have. 

Derek’s dad blamed Jacob, and he believed him, no matter what Naomi said. He said he took the bullet that was supposed to be his, and his best friend died because of him.
