Beyond the Gates Recap May 28

Ted ticked off Nicole by telling her he had recommended her for the Chief of Staff position at Garland Memorial. She wasn’t interested and couldn’t believe he would even say such a thing, knowing she had actively avoided involvement in management.
Ted listed off all the reasons he thought she was perfect for it, all of them complimentary, but she clapped back at him to do it. Ted didn’t understand her snark and said that he thought she’d appreciate the challenge, noting that she’d done a lot of things lately that he thought would never interest her.
Nicole asked what that was supposed to mean, but before he answered, Kial came in. He offered to come back later, but Ted said it was fine and the timing couldn’t be better. Kial admitted he overheard enough to know what was going on and agreed with Ted. Nicole took that as a compliment.
Nicole explained that she didn’t like the bureaucracy of the position. She talked about her patients and the satisfaction she got from her job.
Dani Enlightens Bill About Mike

At the club, Dani and Bill got into it about Mike and Bill’s attitude toward him. Dani couldn’t believe that Bill was still glossing over his predatory ways and told him how she was the subject of his unwanted advances on many occasions. She defended the women that he targeted and Bill ignored.
Bill continued to deny accountability until Dani compared it to men in the fashion industry whom Pamela helped protect her from when she was a teen. Dani implied that Naomi didn’t join his practice because of the culture at his firm, thanks to Mike and Bill.
Chelsea and Madison Discuss Their Wedding

At Orphey Gene’s, Chelsea and Madison talked about their wedding and Madison’s mother. Madison admitted that a part of her wanted to spend her wedding day with her mom. Chelsea wondered if her mom would change her stance on giving medical advice now that a child nearly died.
Madison informed Chelsea that her mom didn’t change her views when her own sister took her advice on cancer and actually died. Chelsea agreed that it might be wishful thinking that she could be getting along with her mom by the wedding.
Dani joined them and wanted to talk about the wedding. Chelsea told her there was a slight change in plans.
Bill and Ted’s Exes Adventure

Ted went to the club and joined Bill at his table. He told him about the cotillion, and they reminisced about Naomi’s. They commiserated about Anita’s condition and how they wanted to spend more time with their families. Ted noted that at the cotillion, he was reminded of the days with the Duprees and wondered if it got easier to be an outsider.
They joked about the mandatory family gatherings and Vernon’s never-ending toasts but admitted that they missed it a lot and knew it was their own fault. Ted said they couldn’t turn back time but agreed that they were missing out on that part of their kids’ lives and wished it were different.
Derek’s Memorial

At Uptown, Ashley hosted a memorial service for Derek. In an open mic environment, people shared their stories about Derek and what he meant to them. Vanessa announced that after hearing Izaiah talk about setting up internships with Derek and college students, she was moved to continue that in his name. She said she would set up a fund for students to work at the clinic and be paid, removing any financial barrier from the them learning.
A firefighter gave Ashley a flag to give to Derek’s family. He said it flew over the station that used to be Derek’s second home. Jacob struggled to talk at first, then shared how close he and Derek were.
Later, Ashley and Jan talked to firefighters about Derek and how much they missed him. Jan said it was like Derek trained his whole life to be their guardian angel, and Ashley listed all the things they wouldn’t be able to do with him anymore. As they spoke, Jacob was behind them, listening intently.
