Beyond the Gates Recap May 21: Joey Denies Plasma Ring Involvement; Lia Refuses to Talk; Ren Rattles Grayson’s Nerves

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Joey is grilled by both Donnell and Elon about the plasma ring. Meanwhile, Ashley mourns Derek with Naomi and Jan, and Lia, while handcuffed, is asked by Jacob to cut a deal. Ren throws a major threat at Jacob and Grayson. Tomas and Kat look for a link between Lynette and the plasma ring.

Beyond the Gates Recap May 21

At the club, Jan called Vanessa and told her she was at work, as Ashley asked for some space. Vanessa told her if she needed to go, it wasn’t a problem. When she hung up, Donnell came in.
Donnell questioned Vanessa on whether or not Joey was involved in the plasma ring. Vanessa defended Joey and his involvement in the clinic. She asked Donnell not to let Deanna poison his mind against him.

Grayson’s Nerves Are Rattled

At the police station, Grayson gave his statement on video. When he was done, he and Jacob talked about what happened and losing Derek. An officer walked past with Ren in cuffs, who stopped to tell Jacob that it was far from over.

Ren said that he wouldn’t be locked up for long since he had what Jacob wanted: the identity of the Impaler. He laughed at Grayson only offering up a low-level like Lia and said that the organization ran deep.

When Ren was hauled away, Grayson asked Jacob if it was true that Ren could get out. Jacob wasn’t sure if he or Lia could make a deal.

Lia Pleaded Her Case

Marcel came to see Lia, who was handcuffed to her hospital bed, and told her he wished she’d come to him for help so it wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. He told her it wasn’t too late, and to tell him everything so he could help salvage what was left of her life.

Lia told him she wasn’t talking without her lawyer, so Marcel shrugged it off and told her he’d see her in lockup. After Marcel left, Shanice came in, and Lia asked her to check her vitals as her heartbeat was irregular.

Lia told Shanice how she’d been defrauded out of money, somehow got involved in the ring, and was ashamed. Shanice showed no empathy and said she would make sure the nurses knew how much they valued them, with no reflection on what Lia had done.

Shanice added that her friend was killed because of it, on top of the damage the ring did to innocent people. She told Lia off and left.

Jacob came to see Lia, but she told him she wouldn’t talk without a lawyer. Jacob warned her that Grayson had an immunity deal that would put her away for a long time. He suggested that she cut a deal of her own.

Lia was interested in a deal until Jacob told her that she needed to give him a name or number of the Impaler or one of his contacts to bring him down. Lia told Jacob she had no idea who the Impaler was.

Elon Questions Joey

Elon went to see Joey and told him his guy was at the warehouse and escaped police custody the night before. He asked why Randy would’ve been there if not for Joey’s involvement. Joey maintained he had nothing to do with anything.

After asking some questions, Elon noted that Joey didn’t have an alibi. Joey calmly told Elon that he nearly lost his son, and that can mess with someone’s head. Elon warned him what he would do to Joey if he found out Joey was involved.

“For better or worse, we’re all tied together,” Joey reminded him. He said it wasn’t his style and it wouldn’t be in his best interest to put Jacob in danger.

Later, Marcel went to the casino for a drink with Joey off the record. He lamented that he never caught on that Lia wasn’t on the up-and-up and thought he’d lost his touch. Marcel shared that he looked forward to his retirement, but Joey reminded him that he still worked for Joey.

Naomi and Ashley Mourn

Naomi stayed with Ashley as she tried to process what happened. Ashley poured out her feelings and said it was like somewhere deep in Derek’s psyche, he knew, and he wanted to part on good terms. 

Ashley thought their last conversation really seemed like they were going to be real friends again one day, who could lean on one another. She remembered their relaiotnship going sideways and how they fought over a towel on the floor, and couldn’t believe they fought over something so trivial.

Ashley sobbed as she said how much she regretted their breakup and how she judged him rather than listening. Naomi told her she was trying to compensate by blaming herself. Naomi convinced her to shower, and it would make her feel better.

When Ashley left the room, Naomi called Jan and asked her to come over. Ashley realized she needed her mom after all when she saw her, and thanked Naomi for being such a good friend.

Once alone, Ashley and Jan remembered Derek through laughter and tears. “Derek was a good honorable man,” Jan said. “All he ever wanted was to be a hero. And in the end, he was,” Ashley agreed.

Ashley blamed herself for everything. She said she never should have been so hard on him when they lived together, and felt horrible about how that led to him being injured, losing his career as a firefighter, which is why he was at the clinic and ultimately killed.

When there was a knock at the door, Ashley opened it to find Grayson there with a bouquet of flowers.

Bill Compares Notes With Tomas and Kat

At Bill’s law office, he and Tomas talked about the shooting and how Jacob was undercover. Bill noted that Lia would need a good lawyer. Just then, Kat burst in and said she hoped that lawyer wouldn’t be Bill.

The three talked about Lynette and suggested that she could have figured out that Lia was involved in the plasma ring and had threatened her.

Later, Naomi came to the office and said Jacob was working and Ashley was with her mom. Bill told her she was welcome to hang out and work as a distraction, but if she needed a shoulder to cry on, he was there.

Meanwhile, Tomas and Kat went to the club and continued talking about their theories. Vanessa was at the bar and overheard them say that Jacob should ask Lia if she had Lynette killed.

Donnell Confronts Joey

Joey called Randy and told him to tell the Impaler to shut it down as it was getting to close to his turf, and he wanted nothing to do with it.

Donnell returned Joey’s cufflinks to him and thanked him, but then went off on him about the plasma ring, accusing him of being involved. He was angry that his mom defended Joey and felt they were both lying to him. Joey insisted they were not, and that he had nothing to do with it, but Donnell didn’t believe him and stormed out.
