Beyond the Gates Recap May 20

Randy called Joey from outside the warehouse and told him he’d heard shots and that Elon was yelling Jacob’s name. He hadn’t seen anyone yet but wanted to know if he should stick around for more info. Joey told him to leave and lay low until he heard from him again.

Inside the warehouse, Elon worried about Jacob, who was unconscious on the ground. He woke up and said he was fine, but asked how Derek was. Ren was hauled away in cuffs, but Lia asked to help Derek. She and Grayson tried to stop the bleeding as they waited for an ambulance.

The Crowning of the Platinum Deb(s)

At the cotillion, Martin was fuming that Tyrell had snuck off to fool around with Jessica, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Jessica’s father, either. As the debs gathered to hear the announcement of the Platinum Deb, Jessica’s parents went to look for her.

Deanna took to the podium to announce the Platinum Deb, but when she opened the envelope, she said there seemed to be a tie, but there was something wrong. As she tried to explain what was going on, Anastasia heard her say quietly that Francesca’s name was on one of the cards.

Anastasia belted it out to the room that her granddaughter had won, put the sash and crown on her, and insisted that she was the winner despite Deanna wanting to call the coordinator for confirmation.

Deanna showed the card in the envelope with Chessy’s name on it, explaining that when she won, the card was gold-embossed, and that this simple handwritten note had Francesca spelled with K.

Donnell spotted a drunken Nate across the room and found the correct card in his pocket. Ted and the others hauled Nate out once and for all, but he yelled how he did it for Chessy on his way out.

When the right winner was announced, Francesca gave Samantha the sash and placed the crown on her head, meekly congratulating her. She grabbed Anastasia and left, humiliated.

Samantha took her bows as the Platinum Deb then danced with her fathers and the rest of her family in celebration. Meanwhile, Vanessa was very happy that Deanna was being nice to her, and she even invited her mom for ice cream afterward.

Joey Warns Vanessa

Vanessa was interrupted by a phone call from Joey, who told her to tell Naomi to go to the hospital immediately. Smitty saw Naomi rush out and worried that something had happened but couldn’t do anything about it.

When Vanessa returned to talking to her kids, Deanna noticed Donnell’s cufflinks and asked if they were Doug’s. He explained how Joey lent them to him, which immediately infuriated Deanna, and she went off on both him and Vanessa about it.

In a moment alone, Donnell asked Deanna to stop being so mean to Vanessa and said he was being nice to Joey because Joey was helping their mom deal with everything they had gone through.

Vanessa went to Joey’s and asked him how he knew about the shooting and if it was some backroom deal of his that had gone wrong. Joey told her it had nothing to do with his businesses, but she should respect her fear.

Joey told Vanessa that the panic she felt, thinking he was involved, was no joke. He said that in his type of business, things can go awry, and he never wanted anything like that to affect her, which is why he tries to keep her out of it.

Jessica and Tyrell Sneak Off

Meanwhile, Jessica and Tyrell went to her dad’s beach house to have some privacy. She told him that her dad didn’t know that she had a key to it, but she’d sneak off to spend time there when she needed to.

After they made love, Jessica talked about how they could do it all summer long until she went to school in California. As she reminded him how they could talk every day and visit, Tyrell seemed less confident that it was a great plan.

Derek Is Shot, Rushed To Surgery

At Garland Memorial, Ashley was just leaving her shift when someone called in an incoming gunshot victim. When the elevator opened, she was horrified to see the patient was Derek and Jacob was at his side. Derek told Ashley that he loved her before being rushed off to surgery.

Marcel brought in Lia and had her handcuffed to a bed. She told the staff she needed a CT scan and her shoulder had been grazed by a bullet. Shanice was beside herself trying to figure out what was going on. Vanessa called and asked if Jacob was okay, but looking at him talking to Ashley, Shanice said she couldn’t release sensitive information and that it was a good thing that Naomi was en route.

Jacob returned to Ashley and told her what happened as she cried. Naomi rushed in, relieved to see Jacob unharmed but quickly turned her concern to Ashley.

Ashley saw the surgeon return to the nurses’ station and speak to Shanice and could tell that something was wrong. Shanice turned to look at Ashley with tears in her eyes. As she walked over to the group, Shanice shook her head sadly, and they all cried in disbelief.
