Beyond the Gates Recap May 14: Samantha Flees After Anastasia’s Attack, Joey and Vanessa clash over Heather

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Vanessa and Joey have a huge fight after she researches his sister Heather. Mona and Randy flirt, and she invites him to church. Joey tries to bond with Donnell by offering diamond cufflinks for cotillion. Anita opts for a lumpectomy while Mona decides to start a cancer care team. Anastasia and Chessy’s insults cause Samantha to run out of the club.

Beyond the Gates Recap May 14

Vanessa went to see Joey at the casino and told him how happy she was that Donnell was in town. She talked about cotillion and recalled how proud Doug was when he taught Donnell how to be Deanna’s escort. 

Vanessa explained the importance of cotillion and how it helped teach young people their worth. Joey was supportive of the event but didn’t want to attend it. 

Joey was upset when Vanessa told him that she’d researched home sales and found where his sister Heather had moved over the years. He told her that she didn’t have the right to just insert herself in something he’d told her not to do.

When Vanessa pressed, Joey told her that she couldn’t force herself into his family issues just to make herself feel less guilty about her own. Vanessa stormed out.

Mona And Randy Flirt At The Diner

At Orphey Gene’s, Mona saw Randy at Orphey Gene’s, and he invited her to sit with him for breakfast. With some innuendos thrown around, Mona scolded Randy for sucking Lynette’s fingers in public.

Randy suggested they find a use for his hands together, but Mona balked. She was happy, though, when Randy revealed that Lynette was gone. 

Randy and Mona chatted, and she mentioned that she was a good judge of character. Randy wondered what she was doing with a guy like him, and Mona said she’d been thinking the same thing.

Mona told Randy she’d like him to go to church with her. She told him that it didn’t matter what he’d done or how far he’d fallen; it was about meeting God right where he was.

As she moved to leave, Randy told Mona that it was a pleasure to see her again. Mona told him that she knew he had big, strong muscles but to let the lord do the heavy lifting.

Joey Makes A Kind Gesture

Vanessa went to Uptown and met Donnell. They got caught up but he could tell she was upset about something and asked if it had to do with Joey. Before she could answer, Joey walked in.

Joey handed Donnell a jewelry box and told him he’d gotten him something for cotillion. Donnell was taken aback when he opened it and found diamond cufflinks. Joey explained they were on loan, as they were a gift from his uncle when he was younger.

Donnell balked, and Joey left. Vanessa told Donnell it was a nice gesture by a man who cared about her and wanted to know him better. Donnell said it felt like a moment that should’ve been between a father and son. Vanessa asked him to just get along as that was what she needed everyone to do for once.

Anita’s Next Steps

At the Dupree mansion, Anita wanted to go to Dr. Bauer’s office way before scheduled because she was sick and tired of being sick and tired. She wanted ot knwo what was next so she could start her life again.

Vernon wasn’t sure the process worked like that, but Anita was determined to get behind the wheel. They went to the hospital and met with Dr. Bauer.

Anita was taken aback when the doctor advised a double mastectomy and the removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes. She asked about a lumpectomy instead. 

The doctor went through the options, and Anita said she knew what she wanted to do. Anita discussed it with Vernon and said that she opted for the lumpectomy. 

After the doctor left, Vernon and Anita listed off all the things that were coming up that she’d be able to be part of. Anita thanked Vernon for always standing by her choices, even when he didn’t agree with them.

When Anita and Vernon were leaving, they saw Mona by the nurses’ station. Anita told her she was glowing. Mona told her that she wanted to start a cancer care team through her church to support people who needed it.

Anita thought it was a great idea, and noted that even a stranger caring made all the difference. She wanted to help in whatever way she could, noting that her biggest support, Vernon, was an angel on earth.

Donnell’s Apology

Back at the casino, Randy told Joey that he had a report on Smitty but Joey told him that he already knew he was investigating the blood plasma ring.

Donnell came in as Randy was leaving and apologized for his rudeness. Joey told him he wasn’t his dad and wasn’t trying to be, but wouldn’t mind being his friend.

Before leaving, Joey offered the cufflinks again. He said he could hold onto them and if he changed his mind, then he could wear them. Donnell took the box with him on the way out.

Anastasia Strikes Again

At the club, Nicole and Samantha were enjoying their morning when Anastasia and Chessy came in and tried to ruin it. Anastasia went after Nicole for her divorce and Ted’s affair, then called Samantha “Orphan Annie,” and said how embarrassing it was that she’d be mingling with the elite but at least Chessy would be there to bring the class.

After Anastasia and Chessy sauntered off to their table, Nicole told Samantha to wait there while she went to set them straight. Nicole marched over and warned Anastasia that if she talked about her granddaughter again, she’d give her the comeuppance she’d been begging for.

Anastasia doubled down, calling Samantha and Tyrell “two strays that her son dragged home” and went all in on June. When Nicole took a seat, she told Anastasia she didn’t need an invitation as her family owned the place. 

Anastasia said Nicole was using that patented brand of Dupree entitlement. When she insulted Samantha again, Nicole told her to go to hell. 

While they were bickering, Chessy went to Samantha’s table and apologized for her grandmother’s behavior. Samantha was shocked, but Chessy clarified that she agreed with Anastasia; she’d just learned it was better not to say the obvious out loud. “But it’s true, Samantha. You don’t belong here,” she added.

Samantha told Francesca no matter how she tried, she wouldn’t get to her. Chessy walked away when Nicole came back. Moments later, Vanessa arrived and asked what she missed. Samantha’s stress level got too much, and she ran out.
