Beyond the Gates Recap June 5: Joey Comes Face-To-Face With The Impaler, Ashley Explodes On Grayson

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, tensions boil over as Ashley confronts Grayson about his past, Smitty expands his dangerous investigation, and Joey finally comes face-to-face with the mysterious Impaler.

Beyond the Gates June 5

At home, Naomi told Jacob that she was going to Ashley’s to check on her, and that she was still trying to make sense of everything. Jacob could relate and was struggling, too.

Jacob vented to Naomi about how Derek shouldn’t have been at the warehouse. He couldn’t get over what happened, or how. Naomi encouraged Jacob to forgive Derek for his choices and accept what happened, but he was even more intent on bringing down everyone involved.

Ashley Blasts Grayson

At Ashley’s, Grayson came to apologize again tell her that he’d made a deal and would be doing probationary community service. Ashley went off on him, calling him an idiot and saying that his self-deprecating attitude wasn’t scoring any points. She said that he kept everything a secret from her because he knew she’d dump him if she knew the truth.

Ashley yelled at Grayson that Derek was dead and nothing he could do or say would make her feel better about it. Naomi interrupted, so Grayson left. Once alone, Naomi suggested that despite what she was saying, Ashley wanted to keep Grayson in her life or else she wouldn’t have opened the door to him.

Naomi wondered if Ashley was really not interested in Grayson or subconsciously not wanting to give him the second chance that she never gave to Derek.

Naomi Gives Ashley Another Perspective

When Ashley started making Derek sound saintly, Naomi set her straight and said that he and Grayson both lied. She noted that Derek lied to Ashley as a way to manipulate her into getting to marry him.

Ashley excused Derek’s lies, saying she was a mess, too and didn’t know what she wanted back then. “I was too hard on him!” she lamented. “You wouldn’t be saying that if he survived,” Naomi clapped back. “You know… I cannot believe that you would judge a dead man. Derek died a hero and he did it, trying to save your husband’s life,” Ashley reminded her.

Naomi reminded Ashley that Grayson was under Lia’s thumb and in over his head, but was forced to do things he didn’t want to do. She said if she was keeping herself from forgiving a man she cared about as a way to punish herself, that wasn’t right. “Being sad and depressed for the rest of your life will not bring Derek back,” Naomi added.

Smitty’s Investigation Expands

At the brownstone, Smitty told Martin and Shonda that his editor wanted to turn his work about the blood plasma ring into a five-piece investigative piece. They weren’t too pleased about not having the extra set of hands to handle the fundraiser.

Smitty assured them they would be fine. Martin worried that Smitty wouldn’t be at the dinner but he told him he would be there for dinner, and after the photo ops, he would leave early to work. Shonda was aghast, but Smitty was sure no one would even notice. “Your speech is going to be such a big hit, you’ll have the whole room eating out the palm of your hand,” Smitty added to Martin.

Jacob Has a Plan

Later, Jacob came to see Smitty at the brownstone and they chatted about the case. He said there wasn’t much of an update that he could give him: Lia talked but claimed she couldn’t name the Impaler, and Ren sang like a canary the moment he was arrested but all of his leads fizzled out.

Jacob told Smitty that he knew a way to find out who the Impaler was, but it involved Smitty sticking his neck out this time. He pointed out the Impaler’s character profile of a narcissist and wanted Smitty to smoke him out by calling him incompetent in his article.

Smitty wasn’t happy with the idea of publishing lies. He thought a better idea would be to ask for the public’s help, and based on the public’s help, they could map each city where the ring had been spotted. “Maybe that will give us a clue to where he’s hiding,” Jacob said hopefully.

The Duprees Prepare for the Fundraiser

At the Dupree mansion, Vernon talked to Victor Newman (Y&R) in Genoa City, and he agreed to be Martin’s keynote speaker at the fundraiser. Anita was thrilled by the news that they had his support and he would be endorsing their grandson.

Anita shared her party-planning details, and they discussed getting VIPs on board to donate and be part of the movement Martin’s campaign was. Martin came by as Anita was finishing up a call with Anastasia, inviting her and her wallet to the fundraiser.

Vernon advised Martin that he’d secured Victor Newman as his keynote speaker. They talked about the money they would raise, and Vernon warned him to save some of it in case it ever came to light about the murder on the country road three years ago.

Martin was confused about how it could get out, since everyone involved had too much to lose. Vernon reminded him that Joey already had a bad reputation and had the least to lose because of it.

Vernon was sure he was involved with the blood ring, but Martin didn’t think so, since Smitty was investigating it and he hadn’t mentioned Joey. Anita noted that the case could become a federal-level issue. Martin realized that if Joey got in trouble with the feds, his relationships with the local cops wouldn’t help, and he’d need the assistance of a Congressman.

Naomi Encourages Patience

Naomi ran into Grayson at Orphey Gene’s and told him she understood what he was trying to do with Ashley, but said she had a lot on her mind. “She’s got a lot of issues with you, but if you want the truth, she’s got even more with herself,” Naomi told him.

Grayson wondered if Naomi was saying he and Ashley still had a shot. She told him to be patient. Naomi explained that both Ashley and Jacob were grappling with survivor’s guilt, and it was coloring every decision that they made.

Vanessa Confronts Joey

At the casino backroom, Randy assured Joey he’d turned the building into Fort Knox with the number of eyes he had on it. Joey saw what happened at the warehouse and didn’t want the same to happen at the casino with the Impaler.

Vanessa interrupted and told him she knew he was meeting the Impaler. As his partner, she wanted to be there and was peeved that he had the meeting planned for days without telling her.

Joey gave her a hard no and ordered Randy to take her to the condo, where she was to stay until the meeting was over. Vanessa walked out on her own, but it came close to Randy having to sling her over his shoulder.

Randy and Vanessa Share an Emotional Moment

When they got to the condo, Vanessa snapped that they went back further than either of them had with Joey. Randy recalled thinking Doug wouldn’t want him in his life when he became the esteemed surgeon at Garland Memorial, and Randy was still running the streets.

Vanessa said Doug appreciated Randy, and when he showed up, it was like Doug could be himself again. Randy wanted to stay with Vanessa, but she told him he had to go back to protect Joey. He told her that they’d been in dicier situations and it all turned out fine. Vanessa begged him to go anyway because she couldn’t lose another man that she loved.

Joey Comes Face-to-Face With the Impaler

Meanwhile at the casino, one of Joey’s henchmen discussed the code “Scarlet” as the secret word to know the Impaler when they arrived and to let them in for the meeting. When they arrived, Joey took one look and gasped, “You!”
