Beyond the Gates Recap June 3: Naomi and Smitty Clear the Air, Monica Considers Chief of Staff Role

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Monica seriously considers becoming Garland Memorial’s new chief of staff, Ted takes a step forward with Shanice while still reflecting on Nicole, Naomi and Smitty clear the air over his and Jacob’s investigation, and Samantha receives a heartfelt gift from Chelsea and Kat that celebrates her place in the Dupree family.

Beyond the Gates Recap June 3

At the hospital, Monica told Shanice that she had been offered the position of chief of staff at the hospital. Naomi joined the conversation and encouraged Monica to take the role, but she wasn’t sure about a long-term relocation. Shanice suggested she agree to take it for a year, then reassess.

Nicole Questions What Might Have Been

At the Dupree mansion, Nicole visited with her parents and got caught up. Nicole was still irritated that Ted suggested her as the chief of staff replacement and couldn’t believe his nerve in saying something she’d never agree to. Vernon left to follow up with Monica about being chief of staff. 

Anita and Nicole talked about her fantasies about Ted and how she didn’t know where they were coming from. She told her mom how she almost talked to Ted about it, but Shanice interupted, and she took it as a sign that she and Ted were truly over.

Nicole insisted she wasn’t Dani; she just got caught up in the season. Anita told her that, thanks to Shanice walking in, she would never know what could’ve been and wondered how that made Nicole feel. She said she was content with her two men. 

Anita noted that 

Smitty Finally Finds Some Peace and Quiet

At the brownstone, Chelsea and Kat were trying to do a social post with Samantha about cotillion, Martin was on the phone, and Jessica and Tyrell were arguing over chess. In the middle of the room was Smitty, trying to write his article. Smitty found it too chaotic to work and kicked everyone out.

Jessica and Tyrell went to her dad’s lakehouse and talked about their relationship from bed. They seemed more determined to stay together and make long-distance work, or their vision of it anyway.

Chelsea, Kat, and Samantha went to Orphey Gene’s and talked about cotillion and boys. Samantha was awed by the strong Dupree women she was around, and they told her once a Dupree, always a Dupree. They gave her the new ChelseaKat bag as a gift for her Samantha-versary and told her she got to pick the new name. Samantha was thrilled, and they told her the bag represented everything she was, including a girl coming into her own.

Ted Opens Up About Nicole to Martin

Martin went to the club and met with Ted. He had just finished up with Eva, who was hurting about Derek. Ted had told her there were plenty of people also grieving Derek and to lean into that. He recalled how knowing Bill had just lost a friend around the time his brother died really helped him, and he wanted the same for her. 

Alone with Ted, Martin said that Smitty had cleared everyone out. Ted recalled when Nicole would work from home and how he’d have to leave, too. Ted then shared that at cotillion, Nicole looked at him for a split second, like she used to before things fell apart. He wondered what she was going to say in his office but still doesn’t know what was on her mind. 

Martin warned not to lose out on Shanice and something that could be great because he was chasing something that may never be the same. Later, Ted asked Shanice to be his date at Martin’s campaign fundraiser, and she accepted.

Naomi and Smitty Clear the Air

Back at the brownstone, Smitty was irritated when someone knocked on the door. Naomi came in and checked that he was home alone. Despite him saying he was trying to meet a deadline, she wanted to talk and said it wouldn’t take long.

Noami wanted ot know why Smitty involved Jacob, but he told her that he was the only one who could have handled the case. Naomi worried that Jacob couldn’t come to her about what was going on, but Smitty was his silent partner every scary step of the way. She said she was grateful for that, and for him. 

Smitty exhaled, relieved to hear that. Naomi acknowledged how he would drop by casually and check in on her. He said it was really hard to keep it from her and hoped she truly forgave him. Naomi said she didn’t like it but understood. “Sometimes we have to keep secrets to protect the ones we love the most,” she said.

Eva and Shanice Bond Over Derek’s Memory

Eva went to the hospital to see Shanice and told her she hoped Shanice could answer some questions she had about Derek. She took a break, and they spent it talking about him, making them both feel better. Shanice noted that she and Derek dated a few times as well.

In the reception, Vernon found Monica and asked if she was ready to accept the job offer. She told him that she thought Garland Memorial was a good fit but wanted to keep on with her own practice. Vernon said they needed a chief who knew her worth and left to get an offer for her from the board.
