Beyond the Gates Recap June 22: Martin Wins the Primary as Kat Suffers a Medical Emergency
TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Martin wins the primary, Eva and Kat come out of surgery, and the family’s relief is cut short when Kat suddenly suffers a medical emergency.
Beyond the Gates Recap June 22

Martin met with Anita and Vernon at Orphey Gene’s and got some last-minute advice about the primaries and a speech of encouragement to the public that he gave live a few minutes later about the tornado.
Darlene Waits for News on Izaiah

At the police station, Darlene lamented that she wasn’t at the hospital for Izaiah, but Naomi assured her he wasn’t alone with her family there. When Darlene was still unsettled, Naomi offered to go check on him so he’d have a Hawthorne there.
Jacob walked Naomi out, and Darlene turned to Elon to tell him how happy she was about his and Izaiah getting along. Elon stopped her from getting too carried away and said it was situational.
Elon had to go but Jacob returned, so Darlene kept up her happy talk about Izaiah and Elon. Jacob told her as well to tone it down, warning she’d push Izaiah away if she came on too strong.
Darlene was reluctantly saying that she would give Eva a chance when they heard from Naomi that the surgery was over without complications.
Joey Keeps His Distance While Vanessa Heads to the Hospital

At the casino, Joey told Vanessa he wished he could be there for Izaiah, but knew he would push some buttons being at the hospital. Joey especially didn’t want to upset Elon, since they had a strained but functional working relationship.
Vanessa told him a fantasy she had of being a sitcom family but they both knew that wasn’t reality. Although Joey said he wouldn’t mind coming home to find her in the pearls and heels she mentioned — and nothing else. Vanessa laughed but said she needed to check on her friends at the hospital and she’d pass along Joey’s words of support to Izaiah for him.
Friends and Family Rally Around Kat and Eva

At the hospital, people set their personal differences aside to support Kat and Eva during their surgeries. After Shanice was kind to Leslie, Anita came in and had a chat with Leslie as well. Anita said that everyone in the waiting room was getting strength from each other and invited her to sit with them as they were all feeling the same.
Tomas and Izaiah ran into one another down the hall. Izaiah wanted to walk away, but Tomas suggested that for the time being, they set aside their differences.
Vanessa arrived and talked to Dani. It rattled her, and she called Deanna to tell her that no matter what, she loved her. When she hung up, Dani told her how Bill assured her he’d keep his mouth shut. “Cheating scandal averted,” Vanessa said as they both realized Andre was there.
Andre said he was there long enough to hear that someone cheated, but he didn’t realize it was his wife.
Vernon supported Chelsea, who was missing her half of ChelseaKat. Ted told Martin he hoped he did well in the primaries, but he told his dad it was okay to focus on his sisters instead.
Elon Warns Joey to Back Off

Elon went to see Joey, who was irritated that Jacob sent him a message through Vanessa that he wasn’t going to stop looking for the Impaler. Joey threatened that if Jacob was so obsessed with him, he should just make him part of his crew.
Elon told Joey that for now, he was off limits, and Jacob wouldn’t be bothering him. Joey asked Elon how Izaiah was doing as he’d heard about Eva. Elon wasn’t too pleased that he asked about his son, but he said they rallied for him and he was getting through.
Kat’s Recovery Takes a Scary Turn

Tomas and Chelsea were with Kat when Ted came in; Chelsea let him take her spot. Ted assured Tomas that although Eva was awake, everyone was different and Kat’s body was taking the time she needed.
Nicole and Tomas swapped places to wait for Kat to wake up. However, her heart rate elevated and the monitor started beeping. Suddenly, the doctor rushed in and asked them all to step out.
Martin Wins the Primary as Kat Becomes the Emergency

In the waiting area, Martin announced that 90% of the votes were in, and it looked like he won the primary. Vernon warned the general election was still a few months away but Anita said they had something to celebrate, and so they did.
As Martin was looking at his phone at clips of what his constituents were saying, a nurse suddenly ran by. Realizing that she had gone to Kat’s room, they were alarmed. Dani joined them and said that something had happened and that Kat was in the emergency.
