Beyond the Gates Recap June 2

Before going to Jacob’s commendation, Naomi went to see Dani for some advice. She admitted that she didn’t sign up for being married to an undercover cop; she thought she was getting the cute guy in the courthouse who came home for dinner and checked in with her a few times a day.
Naomi explained how Jacob moved out to protect her, and they went months apart, full of worry. She wanted to be supportive but didn’t think she could deal with more undercover work. Dani told her to let her spouse be his true self, a lesson she learned from being with Andre.
Leslie Misses Eva

Leslie let herself into Eva’s apartment and made herself at home so she was a little surprised to find her on the couch when she came out of the shower.
Leslie complained that Eva wasn’t giving her enough attention, but Eva reminded her she wanted her to be tied up at the clinic. She promised that no matter how many people she added to her contact list, Leslie would always be her first person.
Kat’s Crime Podcast Dreams

Smitty saw Kat at Uptown, and she had been listening to a crime podcast; she bragged that she could identify the murderer before the end of the first episode. Kat told him that she was considering doing her own podcast.
Smitty was all for it until Kat told him that she was thinking of doing a podcast on Lynette Wise’s disappearance. She wanted him to show her how to go rogue to get info but he said there were ethical and legal rules he had to follow.
Kat said she’d just not call herself a journalist. Smitty warned that labeling herself as an amateur sleuth didn’t give her a free pass and said crime investigation wasn’t for entertainment. “What may seem like fun and games to you has real consequences for real people,” Smitty told her.
Darlene’s Significant Comments

Izaiah met his mom at Orphey Gene’s at her request before the commendation ceremony at the police station. She said she also wanted a family celebration and wanted to plan a dinner on Sunday, but Izaiah turned her down.
Darlene knew Izaiah and Elon didn’t get along but reminded him it was for Jacob. Izaiah wanted to bring Eva, but Darlene was only okay with Naomi going, as she was Jacob’s wife. Izaiah said that Eva was his significant other. “More like other than significant, if you ask me,” Darlene sniffed.
Izaiah said that was exactly why he wouldn’t be coming for dinner or anything else, because she couldn’t hold her tongue when it came to Eva. He told his mom straight up that he and Eva were in love and she would be with him at all events and dinners. “And if you can’t accept that, you won’t like who I choose to cut out of my life,” he warned.
Jacob’s Not In The Mood

At the police station, Marcel teased Jacob about being late and being the man of the hour, but he snapped at him to back off. Elon had a chat with Jacob and reminded him that he brought down some high-level members of the organization.
Marcel joined the conversation as Elon talked to him about how sometimes officers and civilians — and friends — are lost in the process and he had to learn how to deal with it. Marcel agreed and added some comfort.
Jacob still didn’t want the ceremony but Elon insisted that after all the years Jacob felt slighted by him, he wanted to tell the world how proud of him he was.
Marcel tried to lighten Jacob’s mood with a joke gift of a “Not the world’s worst detective” mug, but he didn’t find it funny and told on him to his dad. Darlene came in with her famous chocolate cake and wanted to take pictures with her sons.
Jacob Doesn’t Want the Recognition

When Eva walked in, Darlene shut down the photo-taking when Izaiah asked her to get in the picture. She asked Eva to take the photos instead and commented, “Now we can have a nice family photo.” She was going to delete the ones with Eva, but Izaiah asked her to send them.
Darlene tried to get Izaiah away from Eva, but when it didn’t work, she apologized to Eva for her previous rudeness. Eva accepted the apology and offered to help her with the refreshments table.
Naomi assured Eva that she’d had her own moments with Darlene and not to take it personally. Meanwhile, Dani was sure that Bill would come but was furious when she found out that Hayley had declined the invitation.
Everyone gathered for the ceremony, but Jacob needed some time to himself first. Smitty tried to talk to him, but he pushed him away, too. Later, when he was listening to his dad give the speech, he heard the double gunshots when Derek was killed, and when he got his plaque, he threw it in his drawer.
Jacob told Naomi that he wanted to leave and go for a drink at Uptown. Naomi paused to text Ashley to let her know she’d be a bit before coming over, but Jacob told her to just go with Ashley and that he’d see her later. Naomi asked Dani to cover for both of them and said she was worried about Jacob but went to Ashley’s.
Leslie Crashes the Party

Darlene targeted Marcel and let him know that she had spoken with his ex and that she couldn’t be there because she was out living her best life. “I can’t thank you enough for that intel, Darlene.” Marcel clapped back. Leslie walked in and wondered what the party was for, so Darlene told her it was to congratulate Jacob. “I’m impressed. I didn’t think he’d ever solve a crime,” Leslie told her.
Leslie told Eva she brought some treats for her man, and didn’t realize Mrs. High-and-Mighty Hawthorne was throwing a little po-po partay. Leslie told Darlene she’d better be nice to her daughter, as she wouldn’t want her husband to arrest her for beating her ass. Darlene told her to bring it.
Eva dragged Leslie away, and Darlene snarled at Marcel that he left a good woman to get in bed with a demon. “Now I’m living my best life,” he smiled. Eva told Leslie to calm down and be nice because Darlene was actually treating her kindly.
Leslie used her nice voice but told Darlene that Izaiah had been spending a lot of time with her family and even made them dinner for Eva’s birthday. Darlene grimaced when she saw Izaiah hug Leslie across the room.
Hayley Intervenes

At the club, Bill told Hayley that his hand tremors had subsided after having such a deep sleep the night before. He jokingly went to touch her to prove it, and she pulled away. It made Bill feel bad, reminiscent of something Dani had told him about Mike hitting on her, and he ignored it, wondering if he was still missing signs with his wife.
Later, Bill got a message from Dani about missing out on a family event and didn’t know what she was talking about, but Hayley did. She said that she declined the invitation on his behalf.
Bill wasn’t happy, but then Hayley told him she saw how hard he was sleeping and decided to take care of him, and Bill softened. While Bill stepped out to make a call, Hayley poisoned his tea.
Uptown Blues

Jacob went to Uptown and drank alone until Kat saw him. She came over to his table and could tell he was upset. He told her that he was given a commendation but was clearly not into. Kat offered to buy him a drink. Jacob told her he needed to drown out the sound of his best friend. “How many drinks do you think that will take?” Jacob asked. Kat rushed to his side to hug him.
