TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Kat learns she’s a match for Eva and ultimately agrees to donate part of her liver, while a donor registry match falls through at the last minute and Hayley struggles to fake her grief over Derek.

Beyond the Gates Recap June 19

At the law office, Hayley complained that they couldn’t go home yet. She said she missed having all her things as she couldn’t pack. She left, went to Uptown, and called Randy to tell him that she couldn’t get the poison from the safe.

Naomi came in and saw Hayley angrily hanging up and asked what was wrong. Hayley turned on the waterworks and said she was grieving Derek. She reminded Naomi how the five of them used to hang out, and she had no one to talk to.

Naomi sat with her and tried to give grief counseling, but when she asked to share her favorite Derek memory, Hayley couldn’t think of one off the top of her head. She said if she started, she wouldn’t be able to stop and asked if they could talk another day instead.

Eva’s Condition Worsens

At the hospital, Leslie started to lose faith that Eva would survive. She asked how come Kat took so long to be tested, but Ted wouldn’t let her talk negatively about his daughter.

Dani arrived at the hospital, and Andre told her that Kat had been tested. Talking to Chelsea, she realized her parents didn’t know what was going on and left to tell them. Dani bumped into Bill as he came off the elevator; she scowled, a reminder to keep his mouth shut.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Jacob told Elon that Izaiah needed a liver asap or she wouldn’t survive. Jacob asked if he wanted to come with him to the hospital to check on Izaiah, but he said he was busy at the station.

Elon notified Darlene, and she showed up at the hospital with a change of clothes and support for Izaiah. He thanked her and said it meant a lot.

Kat Learns She’s a Match

At the atrium, Kat met with Tomas and said she didn’t want to deal with everyone at the hospital. He kept her distracted and laughing until the hospital called with her results.

Meanwhile, Dani went to the Dupree mansion and told them about Eva’s situation. They were talking about Kat being put in a horrible position when Kat came in and asked to talk to Anita alone.

Kat told Anita that she was a match and asked, “What about me?” Anita asked her what she wanted. Kat complained that she had to be the match. “Why me?” she wailed.

Anita told her that she lived with the guilt of not helping Barbara but said she didn’t think Kat really came to her for guidance. Kat said she was right and knew her limits of what she was willing to do or not.

A Donor Match Falls Through

Martin talked to Nicole about Kat, who defended her right to take her time to make a big decision. Martin argued that there wasn’t time and that if something happened to Eva and Kat didn’t get tested, she’d beat herself up. Nicole told him he was assigning his own feelings.

Just then, Ted rushed up and asked if they’d heard from Kat, as she wasn’t in the lab. Nicole scolded that Kat was free to come and go as she wanted and blasted Ted for thinking he should call her. She said Kat was asking for space and they needed to respect that.

Ted told them that Eva was running out of time. Nicole reminded him that Kat had just as much chance of being a match as he or Leslie, and asked what his backup plan was.

Ted returned to Eva’s room and told Leslie that Kat had stepped out. Just as she wondered how far Kat would run this time, the doctor came in with news that they found a match in the registry.

Ted went to the waiting room and told everyone the news. Nicole tried to call Kat to let her know she was off the hook, but it went to voicemail. Darlene stepped into Eva’s room to talk to Leslie.

Darlene told Leslie she knew how terrified she must be and wanted her to know how glad she was that they found a donor. Leslie appreciated her kind words. The doctor and Ted came in and said there was a problem — the matched liver had been given to someone else.

Kat Makes Her Decision

In the waiting area, Elon showed up to support Izaiah, but he was bitter that the match had fallen through. Jacob scolded him for meeting his dad halfway, but Elon told Izaiah he knew he was scared and encouraged him to stay strong.

Meanwhile, Bill pulled Andre aside, wanting to talk to him about Dani. He talked about the tornado and how that kind of drama makes people think about the past and the future. They were interrupted, and Bill realized what was going on with Eva.

Kat stepped off the elevator, and everyone rushed her. Nicole yelled at them all to back up and give her space. Kat said she only wanted to talk to her dad and went to Eva’s room.

Leslie was relieved when Kat walked in and asked if she was a match. Kat told them calmly that she was, and she would do the operation. Leslie ran to get the doctor, and Ted thanked Kat. She told him that the only reason she was doing it was for him.

Eva and Kat were both prepped for surgery. When Eva was taken away, Leslie walked with her to OR. Alone in Eva’s room, Izaiah broke down. He looked up and saw Elon, who walked over and hugged his son.
