Beyond the Gates Recap June 1: Jacob Vows Revenge, Nicole’s Ted Talk, and Izaiah Questions Joey

ed thTL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Jacob commits to bringing down the red market ring to avenge Derek. Naomi keeps her BRCA gene secret from Jacob. Nicole attempts to tell Ted about her feelings but is interrupted by Shanice, Joey gives Randy instructions about his meeting with the Impaler, and Izaiah suspects Joey.

Beyond the Gates Recap June 1

Chelsea went to Orphey Gene’s for coffee and ran into Andre. They chatted about Naomi, Jacob, and everything that happened the night of the cotillion. Chelsea appreciated Andre taking the job in Korea so Dani could go with her on her trip to Japan.

Andre told Chelsea all about the tension between him and Derek after his brief relationship with Ashley. Izaiah interrupted just to say hello as he picked up food before going to Jacob’s commendation ceremony. Later, Andre shared his concerns that Dani would one day develop the BRCA gene, just like Anita, and he’d be powerless to help her.

Jacob Is Set On Revenge

At home, Jacob and Naomi made up for lost time in bed, but while they were kissing, Jacob heard the two gunshots that killed Derek and had a PTSD moment. He wouldn’t tell Naomi about it and treated it as a momentary, unnecessary distraction.

Jacob wasn’t interested in the commendation ceremony since Derek was the real hero. Naomi said she’d be grateful to Derek until the day she died, but Jacob was a hero as well. He didn’t see himself that way, and said he was committed to bringing down anyone connected to the red market ring to avenge Derek’s death.

Naomi got worked up, thinking about Jacob going back undercover to finish the job. She blurted out that she’d been going through more than just the undercover stress. Jacob questioned her, but she covered, saying she meant Anita and her mom. Jacob insisted that if anything important happened while he was undercover, he needed to know, but Naomi still didn’t tell him she had the BRCA gene.

Vanessa Advises Nicole For A Change

At the club, Vanessa shared a photo album with Nicole and said that she’d begun going through Doug’s personal effects. She said the memorial was part of it, but also the twins. She thought that part of the reason they had a problem with her being with Joey is because they knew she hadn’t let go of Doug. Nicole advised her to allow herself to feel all of her emotions, not just the ones she thought were appropriate.

Nicole told Vanessa to process her grief in her own terms but to really allow herself to go there. Vanessa asked whether she was giving herself the same advice or still fantasizing about her ex-husband. They bantered a little until Vanessa wondered if it gave Nicole pause for thought that neither Carlton nor Kial was keeping her mind occupied.

Nicole lamented that it was making it awkward to be around Ted. Vanessa advised that she needed to talk to Ted and tell him the truth to clear the air. Nicole wondered how she would now go to Ted, after all the miscarriages, his affair with Leslie, and his illegitimate child, and tell him she found him attractive. Nicole argued that it was horrible advice, but in the end decided she would consider going to his office and talking to him after all.

Shanice Struggles With Grief

At the hospital, Derek found Shanice having a moment, grieving for Derek. He made the mistake of admitting he had asked Nicole to talk to her, and she went off on him for being too scared to comfort her himself. Ted insisted he just wanted to give her the best possible, and thought Nicole was it. “So you thought I needed professional help?” Shanice snapped.

Eventually, Shanice realized that Ted was there for her and was just trying to help. She shared with him her feelings about missing Derek, and he held her hand and comforted her, empathizing as he’d grieved his brother and sister-in-law. Shanice didn’t want to get too grief-stricken at work, but thanked Ted for listening and went back to the nurses’ station.

When Nicole came in, she asked how Shanice was holding up. “Depends. Are you asking for yourself or for your ex-husband?” she replied curtly. Nicole told Shanice she was concerned enough about her 

Shanice thanked her for listening the other day but made a point of letting her know her displeasure with Ted about asking someone else to talk to her instead of comforting her himself. 

Nicole commiserated, saying that when she and Ted were having fertility issues, communication wasn’t a strong point in their relationship. Shanice replied that no offense, but the last thing she wanted to replicate was the issues Nicole and Ted had in their marriage.” Nicole approved and advised that she and Ted kept the lines of communication open; Shanice thanked her for the unsolicited but wise advice.

Nicole Has A Ted Talk

Nicole went to see Ted in his office and told him they needed an honest talk. She said that things had gotten awkward and that “it” started around their anniversary. Just as she was about to tell Ted that she had fantasies about him at inopportune times, Shanice walked in.

Nicole made a quick exit, and Shanice told Ted that she regretted being the way she was earlier. As they embraced, Nicole looked from the hallway, then walked away. 

Vanessa Wants to Help Protect Joey

At the casino, Joey told Randy he wanted the Impaler & Co. to know they couldn’t be doing business on his turf. Randy noted that Joey had been more cautious since being with Vanessa, but Joey told him that the Impaler had a list of body bags and didn’t want anyone in his organization to join them. He ordered Randy to tell them that the meeting would happen at the casino and to have one bodyguard each.

Randy left when Vanessa came in, whose mood had dampened since leaving the club. She told Joey that Jacob thought he was behind the red market ring and asked what they were going to do about it. Joey didn’t think there was much they, or at least she, could do.

Izaiah came to talk to Joey, so Vanessa stepped out. He told him he was on his way to the station and just wanted to know if Joey had anything to do with his brother almost dying.
