Beyond the Gates Recap July 8: NuLeslie Is Tested, Grayson Lands a Job, and Kat & Tomas Reach a Compromise

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Leslie claims she’s a changed woman, Grayson finds work behind the bar, Ted plans a special surprise for Shanice, and Kat and Tomas work through another relationship hurdle.

Beyond the Gates Recap July 8

Leslie went to the station to see Marcel, but he wasn’t there. She told Jacob she thought the hospital’s new chief of staff wasn’t being honest with her, but Jacob didn’t think it was his problem. Leslie asked Jacob to do a background check on Monique, but he wasn’t interested in that, either.

Jacob went home to Naomi, who tried to steer the conversation into telling him she had the BRCA gene, but he interupted and told her that with everything her family had gone through worrying about Anita, they couldn’t talk about anything to do with health for the rest of the evening.

Leslie Tries to Convince Mona She’s Changed

At Orphey Gene’s, Mona and Jan caught up. Jan was in love, and Mona’s diabetes journey was on an upswing. Leslie invited herself to their table and told them about her house demolition in the tornado and Eva’s transplant.

Mona rolled her eyes when Leslie told them that, during her prayers for Eva’s safe operation, she had promised that if Eva lived, Leslie would change her ways. Mona was shocked to hear Leslie say that she was grateful to Kat and that if anything happened to her, she would’ve been racked with guilt.

Grayson Finds a New Opportunity

Grayson was on a job search to replace the income he had doing deliveries, and Ashley helped him look, but they couldn’t find anything suitable. After their shifts, they went to Uptown but were met with a distracted bartender who couldn’t be bothered to serve them what they ordered.
After the second round of arguing with the guy, the manager intervened and said that the regular bartender was off for a few days and he had a problem with getting a replacement.

Grayson offered to help out and said he’d worked as a bartender through college and kept up his license. The manager said he’d think about it and went to see if his bartender got his head screwed on straight. Grayson went behind the bar, made Ashley a new drink, reorganized the shelves, and changed the music. After a bachelorette party came and went, he realized he’d made a few hundred in tips. The manager offered him a part-time job, and he accepted.

Ted Plans a Different Kind of Date

Monique had a meeting with Ted, but ended up giving him relationship advice. She warned him that every time he brought Shanice to the club or went out socially, Shanice was nervous. She wasn’t used to dressing up or being expected to act a certain way.

Ted noted that when he suggested dinner on a yacht, Shanice made some comments, but he didn’t take it that seriously at the time. “Simple can be sexy too, Ted,” Monique told him. She said she wanted her niece to be happy, and he agreed. He had an idea to run by her.

Later, Ted and Monique went to the nurses’ station, and Monique told her niece to take a dinner break. Ted surprised Shanice in his office with a candlelit dinner on silver trays that had food from Orphey Gene’s. She laughed that with the setup, she expected fancier food, but Ted said that was the point: two different things can complement one another, just like them.

Monica Puts Leslie to the Test

By the nurses’ station, Monica met with Leslie. She told her that effective immediately, the partnership between Garland Memorial and the free clinic was terminated. Leslie asked if it was because of her treatment of Shanice. “You bet your sizeable derriere it is,” Monica growled.

Leslie calmly told Monica that she and Shanice had made a truce and that Shanice had changed since her daughter’s health crisis. She said it was a shame that the public would suffer because of things that had happened between her and Shanice in the past, especially since they had moved on from them.

Monica told Leslie she knew about the truce but was testing her, as she didn’t believe she’d changed as Shanice had told her. She agreed to keep the partnership intact.

Kat and Tomas Reach a Compromise

Tomas told Kat he didn’t want to be a kept man and wasn’t happy that she wanted to buy a place for them to live together. Kat wasn’t interested in being his sugar mama but didn’t know why he was triggered. Tomas said that he was raised to be the provider.

Kat said she made her own money and didn’t need Tomas to provide for her. He liked that about her, but he was a traditional guy. “I’m proud of you to be able to afford a place on your own,” Tomas assured her. But her buying a place made him feel like he was stepping into her life and not carrying his own weight. He didn’t want people thinking he was with her for her money.

Kat didn’t care what other people thought, but did say that if this was a deal-breaker for him, it made her question the direction they were headed. She still wanted a future with him but didn’t want him to feel like he had to change for her. Tomas just wanted to feel equal, so he said he’d do it on a trial basis.
Tomas wanted to pay rent and split utilities, keep his own place, and spend most nights with her. Kat agreed to his terms.

Kat Seeks Advice While Tomas Makes Plans

Later, Mona and Jan dropped by, and Kat asked them if she should get out of her relationship with Tomas and join a convent.
Meanwhile, Tomas called his mom in Puerto Rico and told her he was coming to visit on his own and they would meet Kat another time. He explained it wasn’t the right time to propose, and his mom pressured him to settle down and have kids.
