Beyond the Gates Recap July 28

At the hospital, Ted hung out with Shanice at the coffee station because Eva needed his office to conduct a job interview for a new manager at the clinic.
Ted told Shanice about his conversation with Nicole and said that they’d had their first talk like friends in a long time. Shanice apologized; she knew that telling anything to Kial was equivalent to telling Nicole herself. Ted wasn’t bothered by it, and offered to do his best to give the rumor mill more to talk about.
Meanwhile in Ted’s office, Eva met with Noah, but Leslie interrupted. When she found out that he was Kial’s son, she thought that he was the perfect candidate, regardless of his experience or intentions. Eva was concerned it was a side gig until he got his music career going, but Leslie hired him on the spot anyway.
Izaiah Interupts Deanna and Doug

At Orphey Gene’s, Kat caught up with Deanna. She credited Kat for the advice to work with her mom and deal with Joey, but also mentioned another person who was giving her life advice. Kat questioned who she meant, but luckily, Izaiah walked in and she used him as an excuse.
Deanna claimed to have to take a call, and moved over to an empty chair. She put in an ear bud and held up the phone but it was a photo of her and Doug. Deanna cried to her that she almost blew it and that she’d do better. Just then, Izaiah asked her if she was okay.
Deanna feigned that she’d just hung up with a friend and had thought of her dad, which made her sad. Izaiah advised her to go easy on herself as she was still grieving.
While they were talking, Andre came in and sat with Kat. They both complained how they didn’t want to be on camera — Kat with Eva, and Andre with the Tia Allen interview.
Kat recalled how being on a podcast gave her obsessed ex full access, and Andre didn’t like that you didn’t know who was watching. They were talking about two different things, but both related. Kat advised that it didn’t matter who the interview was with; if he wasn’t comfortable, just say no.
Naomi Plays Peacemaker

Kat got a message to come talk to Naomi at Uptown, but when she arrived, she was taken aback to find Chelsea there, too. They both told Naomi their sides: Chelsea felt she only did what Kat asked her to do, and Kat was upset that she was praising Eva for doing nothing. Kat said Eva didn’t know she was hours away from dying, didn’t have to give a piece of her body to someone she hated, didn’t have the stress of surgery, and only had to lie there.
Chelsea countered that Eva had no choice but “to just lie there.” She noted she would’ve sung Kat’s praises too if she’d been at the podcast or let her say her name.
When Naomi told them she understood how they both felt, Kat told her she had to choose a side because she created the meeting. Chelsea said that she agreed with Kat on that one. Naomi was happy that they found a common enemy and they weren’t mad at one another anymore.
Deanna Opens Up to Noah

Meanwhile, Noah came into Orphey Gene’s and reconnected with Deanna. He told her that he took a job managing a clinic but only got his business degree to hold him over til he got his music career going. Deanna realized he got a job at the free clinic.
Deanna told Noah that the clinic was named after her father. She told him about her dad dying in a car accident, and Noah shared that his mom died from a heart attack.
Andre Shares His Concerns

Andre went to Ted’s office and tried to talk to him about his worries about his past haunting him, but he was interrupted by Shanice, who walked in to discuss holiday dates.
Ted and Shanice told Andre that they were going on a trip together. He asked how that came to be, and Ted announced that they were in love; Andre was happy for them.
Leslie Tries to Get Under Nicole’s Skin

Nicole summoned Dani to the club for an emergency meeting. She told her she’d been up all night thinking about what Ted said to her, and felt guilty for stringing Carlton along.
Nicole said that Carlton only agreed to the non-committal arrangement because he hoped it would get her to commit in the end. Dani thought it was obvious for a while that Nicole was Kial-leaning but noted no one could help who they fell for.
Dani told her she had nothing to feel guilty about. No one said she had to commit even if she was leaning one way or another and Carlton and Kial were grown men who could decide for themselves.
Leslie interrupted their conversation and told them about Noah, but in her way, she was just trying to needle Nicole about dating multiple men. Dani held up her knife and warned her not to talk about her sister like that. “It’s been a while since I’ve had to check a ho,” she said.
Leslie was undeterred until Nicole told her that she was obsessed with her and deep down, hoped that Ted would take her back. She told Leslie to give it up already because Ted and Shanice were in love.
