Beyond the Gates Recap Jan 28: Kat asked for help with Nicole, Smitty Endangered Jacob

In the Beyond the Gates recap for Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Smitty and Elon angered Jacob, Ted sent flowers with disastrous results, and June put someone in their place.

Beyond the Gates Recap 

At home, Anita wanted to snuggle up to Vernon but he was focused on researching her cancer. She snapped at him to just leave the house if he wasn’t in the mood. 

Anita told him that she needed alone time, and he did too. She pointed out that she didn’t need him hovering, and he wasn’t doing anything for himself.

Vernon agreed to temporarily leave Anita’s side because she asked. 

Kat arrived and ranted to Anita that her mom was trying to be sexy and was going out with a different man every night.

Anita said other people were acting out of character as well, such as Kat. She said she had Tomas and her company, and other things to talk about but she was just focused on her mother.

Anita asked if Kat really wanted to begrudge her mom from having a little fun. Anita was happy that Nicole was tapping into the side of herself that she’d pushed aside for so long.

Kat asked Anita to talk some sense into her mom, and she said she would. After Kat left, Anita called Nicole and said she needed to have a serious discussion with her.

Naomi met Jacob at Orphey Gene’s, and casually mentioned she was going to the hospital for more information about the BRCA gene.

Jacob wanted to know why she was still doing research, so she lied and said it was for her mom. She left so that he could spend time with Elon, who was on his way.

June asked Jacob if everything was okay with Naomi because she didn’t seem herself. Jacob dismissed it as Elon came in and asked him about his stakeout.

Elon said that he got a tip that someone named the Impaler was behind the ring. He wanted to pull Jacob out and told him he didn’t have any info yet. 

Jacob refused, saying his undercover operation would take some time and that he had just started. 

Jacob got upset that his dad didn’t consider him a real detective and downplayed his abilities compared to other cops. When he stormed out, Marcel came in and took his spot.

Elon shared that he was considering taking Jacob off the case. He told him about the Impaler. 

Marcel said that he would keep his ears open for any tips that would help Jacob, but said if it made Elon feel better, word around the station was that Jacob was up to the challenge.

At the hospital, Kat saw her mom at her office, and told her she’d gotten an eyeful the night before of her at Uptown “hanging out of a dress and hanging onto a man that wasn’t Carlton.”

Nicole refused to let Kat sex-shame her, but Kat didn’t to think of her mom having sex at all. When Nicole asked her how she thought she got on Earth, Kat walked out.

At the nurses’ station, Carlton and Shanice talked about the other night at the club. Shanice noted that he and Nicole left early, so Carlton decided to kiss and tell. 

He assured her that they had great dessert at home — and then asked if she and Ted did as well. Shanice assured Carlton that they did, and she was very satisfied.

Dana overheard Ted telling a florist to write “It’s beautiful to know surprise is still possible” on a card for flowers he was ordering. When he hung up the phone, she assumed it was Valentine’s Day flowers for her and Eva to feel like queens.

Ted told Leslie that if she was serious about forging their friendship, then he’d have to accept his relationship with Shanice. Leslie assured him that she was being taken care of by another man anyway.

Naomi went to the hospital and asked Shanice for her take on some of the doctors she was referred to. 

Leslie ran into Marcel in the hospital hallway. He asked if she wanted ot join him for breakfast. As they walked to the elevator, they passed a floral delivery. 

Leslie made an excuse to stay and talk to Peach’s doctor. When Marcel was gone, she asked the delivery guy who the roses were for and he said Shanice Johnson.

Shanice overheard and went to look at the bouquet on the counter. Leslie told her that she had gotten them too when her and Ted were sleeping together, a whole collection of them, actually. 

Nicole walked by and saw the roses, and she mused to a colleague that Ted gave her a single rose after a…milestone. Shanice overheard and was taken aback.

When Ted came with peach cobbler, she asked if that was one of his signature moves with all his boos. 

Shanice told him she’d overheard that giving rose after sex was his thing. She didn’t mind, since she got a whole bouquet. Ted asked her out after her shift.

Smitty came home after following a story all night. Martin wondered if it was related to anyone on Capitol Hill. Smitty told him that the story could only help his campaign, but couldn’t tell any details.

Martin hoped it wasn’t a dangerous mission that Smitty was on. He was vague, but said that he wouldn’t take undue risks. 

After Martin left to meet Vernon, Smitty was supposed to sleep but had a new idea and excitedly made notes instead.

Jacob went to see Smitty, and he told him he had info for him since he was eavesdropping on the boss. Jacob scolded him and said he told him to wait in the car.

Jacob explained how he could have blown his cover, and said he couldn’t be skulking around in the dark while he was trying to infiltrate and built trust with the people.

Ted ran into Kat at Orphey Gene’s. He thanked her for keeping Shanice company; she was glad he wasn’t with Leslie.

After Ted left with his peach cobbler, Kat told June how her dad kept pushing his “devil spawn” on her and that her mom was out every night with a different man.

June noted that everything Kat said was about herself, rather than anyone else’s point of view. “That’s a lot of ‘I’s.’ Maybe the problem is you,” June suggested.

June shared her relationship with her sister and warned her not to slam the door so hard with Eva that she couldn’t open it when the day came that she needed her.

Nicole got to Anita’s, who told her she needed get exploring her wild side out of her system. She said if the worst happened, she needed Nicole to take over as matriarch of the family.

Anita showed Nicole a binder she was making with all the instructions on how to take her place.
