Beyond the Gates Recap

At the Brownstone, Samantha, Smitty, and Martin didn’t know how to feel when Tyrell was into the cotillion now that Jessica was. Martin didn’t know what was worse: Tyrell tearing down the tradition to begin with, or his reversal.
Tyrell insisted he was doing what he wanted and not being influenced by Jessica. They told him that he had to remember that and not protest the cotillion at the event.
Later, Smitty was working on a story but didn’t want to share it with Martin. He said that it was a puff piece when Martin said he hoped it wasn’t dangerous.
At the hospital, Shanice was delighted when Ted called to confirm dinner at the country club. Shanice worried that the Duprees wouldn’t be happy to see them together so soon, but he didn’t care.
Ted said that he liked Shanice a lot, and if she wasn’t welcome there, then his membership wasn’t worth anything. Their conversation was interrupted by Kat, who came to Orphey Gene’s to confront her dad for telling Eva about her clear test results.
Ted explained that he was so excited, he wanted to share the good news. Kat seethed that he could tell anyone but his spawn. Ted said that one day they would need one another, and that she was Kat’s sister.
Kat laid into Ted about his affair, Eva’s existence, and his lie about it. But when she equated Eva to cancer, Ted heard enough. “The temper tantrums aren’t cute anymore,” Ted warned.
Kat ripped into him, talking down as she reminded him he’d had an affair and who with. “We have come to the end of apology season,” Ted snapped. He asked if he’d been anything less than a good father to her.
Ted said he’d tried reasoning and owning his wrongs, but he wouldn’t lower his head forever. He told Kat that Dana was a mistake, but Eva never was. “She’s a gift. Just like you, just like Martin,” Ted added.
When Ted told Kat that he would tear out his own pain for her and Martin, and do the same for Eva, Kat was shocked. “You couldn’t have said anything more hurtful to me. Eva? Kat and Martin? Same??” she seethed. She insisted that his love belonged to her and Martin, not Eva.
Ted explained he loved all of his kids and couldn’t choose one over the other. “I can’t even look at you,” Kat told him. “Well, baby girl, that makes two of us,” Ted replied. Stunned, Kat walked out.
Ted called Shanice again and picked up where he left off. He said he refused to keep her in a bubble and wanted to show her off to Fairmont Crest. Shanice insisted on telling Nicole first.
Carlton came to see Nicole with tickets to see if he could get her to forget about her date with Kial. Nicole sensed he was jealous, but made it clear they weren’t exclusive.
Carlton said he’d waited too long to throw his opportunity with Nicole away, but understood her reluctance to settle too quickly. She told him what she liked about her date with Kial, but noted he wasn’t Carlton.
As Nicole and Carlton began to kiss, Kat burst in, claimed Nicole needed to talk to her ex, and scolded them for not locking the door.
Carlton left as Kat said that Ted was taking Eva’s side while the family was dealing with cancer. “He’s right,” Nicole decided without hearing more. She said that Kat had to let it go.
Nicole told Kat that Eva wasn’t obsessed with Kat the way that Kat was with her. She wondered what it was doing to Kat’s health. Kat disagreed and blew off what she said before leaving again.
When Nicole was leaving, Shanice tried to stop her as she wanted to discuss something but Nicole told her it would have to wait.
Naomi went to see Dani’s doctor at the hospital and confessed that, actually, she had tested positive for the BRCA gene. The doctor gave her referrals for a genetic specialist and a social worker for support.
Carlton came to Orphey Gene’s and sat with Ted. They talked about Carlton’s worries about Kial and Nicole, and although it was initially awkward, they ended up bantering and laughing.
Vanessa and Kial ran into one another at the cafe and recognized one another from Winterfest. They caught up and realized they were both widowed. Vanessa gave him her card in case he wanted to stay in town and needed to buy or rent a place.
At the police station, Jacob texted a loving message to Naomi but as usual, she ignored it. His face fell but then Marcel walked in, and he took his frustration out on him.
Jacob ripped into Marcel for missing a mandatory meeting and showing up with a new, expensive shirt on and lipstick on his collar. Marcel told him not to worry about who he was sleeping with and to try to be with that “fine Dupree woman” he was with instead.
Elon came over and asked about a big tip that Jacob had to knock down an organized crime ring. They told Marcel about a black market plasma ring in the DMV.
Marcel said he didn’t want to take the case as he couldn’t go undercover again; he’d be recognized. Jacob seethed that they didn’t need someone else on the case, as he wanted it.
Marcel forewarned Jacob what going undercover was actually like. Jacob pleaded his case and asked his dad for his shot at taking down the criminals. Marcel was sure Jacob would get killed, but Elon gave him the case.
“You’re funeral, kid,” Marcel said. He left as Elon reiterated to Jacob what undercover was really like.
Kat went to Martin’s and told him about her blow-up with Ted. He didn’t see the harm in Eva knowing she didn’t have the BRCA gene. Samantha came in, and Kat quickly refocused on helping her with her cotillion practice.
When Kat mentioned Eva again, Samantha gave her some advice. She suggested she look at Eva through someone else’s perspective to see what she looked like without hatred.
At the country club, Shanice and Ted were giddy with excitement about their date until Anastasia fired shots about him being with Shanice instead of Nicole.
Shanice told her off with perfection, calling her an old nag that no one wanted to ride anymore. Ted was impressed and backed Shanice up.
As they laughed, Nicole and Ted walked in. Nicole wondered if this was what Shanice wanted to talk to her about at the hospital. Shanice said that it was and she didn’t want her to find out this way that she and Ted were seeing one another.
