Beyond the Gates Recap Feb 25

At Orphey Gene’s, Eva set Leslie straight on permits and licensing and told her some info on what she needed. Leslie realized what an asset she was and wanted to hire her as the general manager of the clinic.
Eva declined, but Leslie asked her to help her help people. Leslie got on the phone to follow Eva’s advice about getting the fire department to do an inspection but got in an argument.
Across the diner, Derek overheard and snarked his opinion. Eva suggested Leslie recruit him but she said Mr. Stop Drop & Roll had already declined an offer.
Derek and Leslie got into it again, with him reminding her that this time last year she was running down women on the road. “Allegedly,” Leslie swiped.
Leslie left and Derek took her seat. He talked to Eva about Leslie and the clinic, and what it would be like if he did work there.
Ashley’s First Year Anniversary

Ashley was surprised when Shanice surprised her at the nurses’ station with a gift. It was a gold #1 pin for her first anniversary as a nurse.
Shanice wished their chief of staff had acknowledged her accomplishment, but told Ashley she was a great nurse and that it was a hard job. She didn’t want her to forget why she chose the profession one day, and gave her a necklace to remind her.
Ashley told Shanice what it meant to her to be a nurse; she credited Shanice for her leadership. Ashley said that working there had taught her that life was too short to get caught up with stuff you didn’t want to do.
Derek came in and announced that he was hired at the clinic and was getting back to saving lives. He said he was the new general manager and would report only to Eva.
Naomi Advises Elon On How To Lead

Naomi went to the police station about a client, but saw Elon. He cryptically told her that sometimes the bad guys win. “I need to talk to you about Jacob,” Elon said.
Elon shared he was worried, but Naomi said Jacob was insistent on proving himself. Elon was shook up because a cop made a mistake that cost his partner’s life.
Naomi lectured that she had her own worries and trusted her husband’s abilities, but if they were strained, she needed to trust Elon’s ability to prepare and guide him.
Naomi told Elon to find a way to protect Jacob without humiliating him by pulling him off the case. Elon was tormenting himself that if anything happened to his son, it was on him. Naomi gave Elon an inspiring speech about being the leader that Jacob needed.
Leslie came in and interrupted, so Naomi left. Leslie said she needed a permit expedited and thought that, as they were practically family, he could help her out.
Elon told her not to get too happy about their relationship, as Izaiah was non-committal and spontaneous when it came to changing his mind. Leslie was undeterred and flirted with him before leaving.
Jacob Gets Recognized

In an alley, Jacob got into an argument with a guy who’d asked for a light but ended up threatening to take his watch. After he got that settled, he messaged Ren and said the contact he was supposed to meet was late.
Ren wrote back to handle it. Just then, Jacob got a tap on the shoulder. He turned and saw Izaiah. They were both surprised to see one another, although Izaiah knew Jacob was undercover.
Izaiah explained he was getting something to eat and told Jacob that he was so jumpy, he didn’t look like he fit in out there. Jacob told him not to tell Naomi he saw him and get out of there.
Later, the contact finally showed. He gave Jacob the keys to the truck to make the plasma drop, and said he better get going, as the Impaler didn’t like to be kept waiting. “Did he tell you that himself?” Jacob asked. The guy just looked at him and left.
Meanwhile, Izaiah ran into Naomi in the club cafe. He told her Jacob loved her and he would be safe. She felt better, and left when Eva arrived. Eva told Izaiah she was glad he had the profession that he did.
Tomas Turns Down Kat

At Uptown, Kat told Tomas how Chelsea was getting married and her mom was in her anything-goes era. She thought if she moved home, she’d wake up to a man cooking breakfast.
Tomas said that since she positioned it as her last choice, he wasn’t interested in having her move in with him. He pointed out that she was quite clear she didn’t think she or their relationship was ready for that step.
Kat said the idea coincided with other things but he said he wanted it. She didn’t understand why he changed his mind; Tomas said she was his future, but they weren’t ready.
Kat was furious, feeling like their relationship was one-sided. Tomas told her he loved her but taking that step had to be for the right reasons.
Also, Tomas wanted to protect their relationship by letting Kat have her freedom to explore herself before moving in, getting married, and having kids. Kat was satisfied with his explanation, and they made up.
Tomas tried helping Kat think of what type of place she’d need. He reiterated that she was still welcome at his place anytime, and offered to get a key made and clear out some drawers as well.
After looking at some listings on Vanessa’s website, she called her to see if they could meet to see some apartments.
