Beyond the Gates Recap April 30: Lia Puts Madison’s Practice On Hold, Ted and Leslie’s Close Encounter, Tyrell Punished

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Tyrell and Jessica’s intimate moment is interrupted by Smitty, leading to Tyrell being grounded until cotillion. Lia puts Madison’s practice on hold, Ted and Leslie share a surprisingly close moment, and Vernon advises Martin on his political career.

Beyond the Gates Recap April 30

At the hospital, Lia called Ren and told him that his message got through to Grayson. Meanwhile, Anita talked to Madison about Vernon and got some peace of mind about his aging.

Anita went to her appointment, but then Lia came by and told Madison she knew about the lawsuit. Madison was none too pleased when Lia suggested that she pause seeing patients until it was resolved.

Vernon Advises Martin

Martin came to see his grandfather and told him about Joey offering security, turning him down, and feeling forever threatened with his secret.

Vernon was bristling about Joey, but told Martin to stay focused on winning his congressional seat and to think about a Senate run later.

Chelsea Thinks It’s Never Too Late To Take A Turn

Leslie was at Orphey Gene’s when Chelsea gave her a piece of her mind about her interference when she was trying to make wedding plans.

Leslie tried to dismiss Chelsea, saying it was old news and to get over it. Chelsea asked why she was so antagonistic, so Leslie explained that she was minding her own business when she approached her. They got into it about who is worse or better — the Duprees or Leslie.

After, Chelsea got a call from Madison, who told her she was having a bad day. They met at the gym, and Chelsea taught her fiancé some self-defense.

Madison’s mom called, but Chelsea took the call and refused to pass along any messages.

Smitty Interviews Ted

In the gym locker room, Smitty ran into Ted. After talking about cotillion, Smitty told Ted he was working on a piece about blood donors and asked him some questions.

Ted told him what he could, but said since his surgeries were elective, he wasn’t as affected by the national blood shortage, and he would just get what he needed locally.

When Ted returned to the hospital, he got there in time to see Anita having a go at Leslie in front of Shanice. After the dust settled, Ted asked Leslie if she was okay.

They moved into Ted’s office, where Leslie shared her frustrations about hearing how Anita was raised, yet she was denied by her mother.

Ted pointed out the irony of being denied their daughter, but also told Leslie he could see some changes in her. As he talked, he held Leslie’s hand – just in time for Shanice to walk in and see.

Once alone, Ted explained that he had to give credit where it was due, and he could finally see the Dana he once knew in Leslie.

Double Standards

At the brownstone, Samantha and Jessica worked on their cotillion assignment until Tyrell came in. He was shocked when Jessica admitted she’d gotten into university in California, noting that he’d already accepted Banneker.

Samantha agreed to go get some bubble tea so they could have some time to talk. Once alone, Tyrell was distressed that all the California guys would be hitting on his girlfriend.

Jessica assured Tyrell that he was the only one she wanted and that they could make long-distance work. Tyrell realized they had the house to themselves, and they ran up to his bedroom.

Just as things were getting intimate, Smitty called out that he was home. Tyrell and Jessica scrambled to act natural and came back downstairs to find Samantha back as well.

Samantha laid into everyone about Tyrell and Jessica being alone upstairs, pointing out that they practically forced her to leave. By the time Martin came in, she was questioning why there was hypocrisy for her to be alone with a guy but not her brother in the same position with Jessica.

Jessica decided to join in and pitched a damning argument, questioning Martin and Smitty’s patriarchy, and by the time she was done, they agreed to punish Tyrell.

Furious that he’d been grounded until cotillion, Tyrell refused to attend any practices with Jessica and said he’d rather be in his room, where he could avoid seeing his sister and girlfriend.
