Beyond the Gates Recap April 20: Jacob Recruits Grayson, Derek vs. Ashley, Marcel Spends Big

TL;DR: In today’s Beyond the Gates recap, Jacob risks attention to  Grayson to ask him to look into someone named Rachel. Meanwhile, Chelsea rejects Dani’s business idea. Ashley defends Grayson from Derek, who suspects her boyfriend is up to no good. Plus, Leslie confides in Vanessa about her relationship with Marcel.

Beyond the Gates Recap April 20

In “Rashad’s” motel room, Smitty came to meet Jacob, who showed him his injuries and told him to stop investigating the case. Smitty told him he could handle himself.

Jacob said he was a trained professional, and look at the damage Ren did. Smitty countered that this was his story first and that they both wanted to use it to advance their careers. Smitty told Jacob if anyone should walk away, it should be him.

Jacob backed down, and Smitty told him some info he’d dug up on Grayson’s coworker, Rachel Lewis, as he’d gotten her name from the files on Nicole’s computer. 

Jacob had already run a check on her, but Smitty found out that an auto theft had been removed from her file. 

Dani Questions Andre

At home, Dani asked why Andre why he felt the need to get all up in Bill’s face about him calling her ‘baby.’ Andre said he didn’t go hunt Bill down; he saw him and told him that Dani would be hard to get over. Dani said that was what she told Bill, too. 

Dani called Chelsea to tell her the idea she’d had to show off ChelseaKat bags while modeling Tatum’s new line, but Chelsea wasn’t on board. She thought it would take away from ChelseaKat branding, and didn’t really want to be working with Dani again.

Later, Andre consoled Dani’s hurt feelings as she lamented that Bill got to work with Naomi, and she couldn’t do the same with Chelsea.

Grayson Surprises Ashley 

At the nurses’ station, Ashley and Grayson flirted about waking up together, and then he took her aback by asking for Derek’s number.

Grayson explained that he had heard there would be an opening for a managerial position in the lab. Since Lia wanted people to volunteer and would be hiring the manager, he thought it would impress.

Ashley understood but didn’t know how Grayson would fit it into his schedule.

Derek Suspects Grayson

At Orphey Gene’s, Eva and Derek met to talk about the clinic, and Eva mentioned that her mom was dating Marcel. Derek scoffed that he didn’t think she was his type, given that he was a cop, and she was a criminal.

Grayson called Derek to ask about volunteering, but he refused to hire him and hung up. Eva thought it was a mistake, noting they could take all the help that they could get. 

Derek admitted that Grayson gave him a bad vibe. Eva said there was nothing but bad vibes with Kat, but if she wanted to volunteer, she’d take it. She told Derek that he had to give Ashley’s boyfriend a chance.

When Naomi and Ashley came into the diner, the four of them discussed Grayson and Derek’s distrust of him. He cited the day he found him sooping around the clinic, but Ashley said she remembered that day, and he was just looking for somewhere for them to talk privately.

Ashley said that Grayson warned her that Derek was just pretending to be her friend so he could get back together with her, and hearing him trash Grayson made her think he was right. Derek left but told her to just be forewarned that something was off with her boyfriend.

A Change Of Plans

At Uptown, Leslie waited for Marcel at the bar, but the bartender gave her a glass of wine and said someone special wanted her to have it. 

Marcel called and told her that he had something special planned for her, and asked him to meet at the restaurant instead. Leslie happily told him she was on her way.

At the casino, Vanessa told Joey that she and Nicole had made up. She noted that he didn’t have any close friends, so he wouldn’t understand how much she meant to her and why. Joey was fine with being a lone wolf.

Joey had a call that there was a disturbance on the tables, then realized it was Marcel and Leslie throwing money around. Vanessa suggested he talk to Marcel, and she’d befriend Leslie.

When Leslie came in, Vanessa told her they were partners of sorts and got her to open up about her relationship with Marcel.

Leslie told her that he had signed his divorce papers and wanted to spend some of his retirement fund so his wife couldn’t have it. Leslie warmed up to Vanessa and confided that life with Alan wasn’t great, and she was Ted’s mistress, but Marcel chose to be with her, and she liked him.

Jacob Heeds No Warnings

At the hospital, Jacob waited in the elevator until Grayson got in to do a drop, then stopped it to ask why he hadn’t been returning his calls. Grayson said he’d been given a warning.

Jacob told him that he’d gotten roughed up for changing the drop location, but wanted Grayson to look into someone named Rachel and find out what he could so they could put an end to the case.
