Beyond the Gates Recap

At Orphey Gene’s, Kat came to meet Martin, but assumed he either wanted her vote or to continue telling her off. Martin told her that the way he handled Samantha and included her in it was wrong. He said he wanted his little sister back. Kat said that was generous, considering what just happened between her and her niece.
Kat explained about how she’d assumed and flew off the handle with Samantha in front of Eva. Martin didn’t realize Samantha was so serious about the free clinic happening. Kat admitted that Eva was guilt-free in the scenario and that Samantha called Kat out for her behavior in front of her.
Kat didn’t like the way she got with Eva, and admitted that she was just having fights with family over it, and thought she might be losing Tomas. She told her brother how Tomas asked her to move in, but Kat said she worried that if Tomas really knew the real her, he might not like her anymore.
Martin told Kat how many cute things she did, pumped up her ego and confidence, and told her she was great and should let Tomas in to see that. Kat and Martin appreciated having their relationship back and put their phones aside to have some more quality time together.
Ashley and Naomi met at Uptown and caught up since Winterfest. Ashley told her about her conversation with Dani about Andre, and she got closure. Naomi thought it was “amazingly healthy” of her. Just then, Derek and Jacob came in, and there was an awkward pause as they all spotted one another. Jacob and Naomi offered to leave, but Derek walked over to say hi, and Ashley invited them to join her and Naomi.
During some small talk, Ashley told Derek that she knew Sheryl had made a move on him and wasn’t surprised, as she always thought she had a crush on him. It got awkward again, as Derek was committed to becoming friends but that seemed too weird to talk about. Jacob and Naomi tried to make it better, talking about first steps towards friendship, then Naomi got Ashley out of there. Jacob apologized to Derek for the way it went wrong.
Naomi and Ashley went to the gym cafe for coffee. Ahsley had a flashback at the four of them hanging out when she and Derek were still together. She apologized to Naomi for breaking up the foursome. Naomi said they were all growing and changing, and that was just life.
Back at Uptown, Derek wondered if Ashley was feeling a way about him being with Sheryl, but Jacob shot that down. He said he and Ashley were over and could work on being friends, but not to read into anything more. “What’s wrong with still hoping that Ashley gives a damn about me?” Derek snapped.
Jacob told Derek that they broke up for a reason, and there would be someone else out there who would make him feel better. He thought Sheryl could be that person, but if he were only leading her on to make Ashley jealous, he’d be screwing up his work life.
Chelsea came to the hospital to see Madison and recapped how they’d made up on their walk the day before.
Laura ran into Eva at the hospital and told her how much her life had changed. She said that Leslie stole months of her life and was still threatening her. Laura even carried her keys in her hand, walking to her car, and she spent a lot of time every day convincing herself Leslie won’t do anything to her, but felt like a loose end that needed to be snuffed out.
Eva apologized for what Leslie put Laura through, but noted how well-behaved she was at Winterfest but Laura said that was only because the Duprees hired Marcel to watch her. Laura did note that Eva looked happy with Ted at the party. Eva emotionally told her that for a moment, she felt like Ted’s princess and it meant the world to her. Laura and Eva bonded about being raised by a single parent and feeling like it was just the two of them against the world.
Leslie went to the police station and brought Marcel some donuts. Leslie purred her compliments until he told her he had to get back to work and asked if she remembered that he had a wife. “The real question, Detective, is…do you?” Leslie cooed. She said he talked more about his boat than his spouse. With Elon watching, Marcel noted that she was dipped in faith, as there were people at the station who’d love to put some jewelry on her, as he showed his handcuffs.
Undeterred, Leslie dropped some innuendos about the uses she could think of for the cuffs. She grabbed her coat and sashayed by Elon on her way out, who then asked Marcel what was going on. Marcel said he was being charming to get her to confess.
Marcel and Elon squabbled about how it was supposed to be Jacob’s arrest but Marcel said he was confusing him for a good cop. Marcel took a swipe that he’d been hired by Anita Dupree before walking away from his boss.
At the country club, Bill met with Tomas and coached him that their goal with clients is to be a sort of therapist to work through issues, including how to write wills. Bill got a text from Pauline, and she said that a video of her boyfriend, Jared, proposing had gone viral. Tomas thought they had just met, and was surprised they were engaged already. Bill noted that Pauline was slated to be a partner one day, but now Tomas was.
Bill left to take a call, and Tomas spotted Eva coming in. He talked to her for a moment, but she left when Bill returned. Bill warned Tomas that his “friend” was trouble, and if he wanted to be a partner, he couldn’t break his niece’s heart. He forewarned him against a Dani vs. Hayley 2.0 and said it would be worse, as Eva and Kat were sisters.
Tomas claimed he was serious about Kat and told him about their weekend away. Bill told him to put a ring on it. Tomas said he asked her to move in, but she said no. Bill knew his own life was still a mess of public opinion, but he had high standards for those at the firm.
Tomas wondered how to convince Kat he was serious. Bill told him that the Duprees had high standards, and Kat probably put up walls to test him. He advised Tomas to handle Kat’s tests like a leader.
At the bar, Leslie met Eva, who told her about her conversation with Laura. She told Leslie she should be kissing the ground Laura walked on for letting her move on with her life and look at it now. Instead, Leslie was tormenting her, and it made no sense. Eva reminded Leslie that she used to blame her behavior on having less, but now she had everything and had no excuse.
