Is Adam Newman Ready to Finally Step Out of Victor’s Shadow on The Young and the Restless?

Adam Newman insists he’s happy putting family first on The Young and the Restless, but Victor’s latest snub and Phyllis’ blunt assessment raise a bigger question: is he finally ready to build something that’s his alone?

For years, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) has been the son Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) trusted to handle the jobs no one else could. Whether it meant corporate espionage, dirty tricks, or cleaning up the family’s biggest messes, Adam was the one Victor called. He wasn’t always thanked for it, but he was indispensable nonetheless.

Now, for perhaps the first time in a long time, Adam seems to be asking whether that’s enough. As Mark Grossman recently reminded us in an exclusive interview, Adam is Victor Newman Jr. in more ways than one. He’s ambitious, strategic, fiercely intelligent, and willing to make difficult decisions when necessary. The question is whether he’s destined to spend the rest of his career using those talents to build Victor’s empire — or whether it’s finally time to build one of his own.

Adam Has Done Everything Victor Asked

It’s hard to argue that Adam hasn’t earned his place at the top of the family empire. While Victor focused on reclaiming Newman Enterprises after Cane (Billy Flynn) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) stole it away, Adam remained loyal — come on, the guy even climbed a mountain for his father! He went after Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) at Victor’s direction, even when it created problems in his personal life with Chelsea. He repeatedly put the family business ahead of his own interests because that’s what Victor expected of him.

Then came another family obligation. Adam left town to help Nick (Joshua Morrow) deal with Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) and his addiction in Las Vegas, putting family first once again. While he was gone, everything changed.

Without warning, Victor announced that Victoria (Amelia Heinle) would once again be running Newman Enterprises, leaving Adam completely blindsided. From Adam’s perspective, he had every reason to believe he was next in line. He had been doing the work. He had proven his loyalty. Instead, the position went to his sister.

Even Newman Media Was Never Really About Adam

The disappointment didn’t start with Victoria’s promotion. When Adam and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) got back Newman Media, it should have been a career-defining victory. The company had originally belonged to Victor before being stolen, and Adam quietly engineered its return.

Adam lied about buying the company, rather than pulling off a major corporate coup because he wanted to protect Sally (Courtney Hope) from getting caught in the fallout. However, no one celebrated what Adam accomplished.

Victor wasn’t impressed by Adam’s initiative. He only cared that Billy no longer had one of his companies and he wasn’t the one to yank it back. Victoria questioned the deal rather than praising it.

Even the fact that Adam and Chelsea had been left unemployed after losing Newman Media barely registered with the rest of the family. Recovering the company wasn’t about giving Adam another opportunity. It was about restoring something Victor believed belonged to him. For Adam, that had to sting.

Phyllis Said What Adam Already Knows

During Wednesday’s episode, Phyllis Summers verbalized something viewers have watched play out for years. She told Adam he’ll never win the prize he’s been chasing: Victor’s respect. It wasn’t really news to Adam, and his reaction suggested he already knew she was right.

No matter how many impossible assignments he completes, no matter how many sacrifices he makes, Victor always seems to move the finish line. The approval Adam has spent years seeking never quite arrives.

Is Adam Really Happy Being “Just” a Family Man?

Chelsea knows Adam pretty well, so she asked whether he was thinking about making a play for control of Newman Enterprises. His answer was a confident no. Adam said doing that would mean becoming Spyder again, returning to the ruthless version of himself he’d worked so hard to leave behind. That’s not who he wants to be anymore.

Instead, Adam insisted he’s content focusing on his family, even if it means settling for less than he’s capable of professionally. It’s exactly what he told Phyllis as well. While Chelsea seemed relieved with his response, Phyllis wasn’t convinced. Frankly, it’s hard for viewers to be convinced either.

Adam May Be More Like Victor Than He Wants to Admit

Adam has always shared Victor’s greatest strengths — and his greatest flaws. He’s driven and competitive. He wants to win, and he holds a grudge until he strikes back, sometimes even after he strikes back. Those qualities don’t simply disappear because someone decides they’d like a quieter life.

Phyllis knows Adam has too much ambition to spend the rest of his career taking orders from Victor and Victoria while pretending he doesn’t want more. The irony is that Adam may finally be facing the same decision Victor once did.

Does he continue fighting for a seat at someone else’s table, or does he build a table of his own? After years of proving himself to a father who never seems fully satisfied, Adam may finally realize that the only way to escape Victor’s shadow isn’t to run Newman Enterprises. It might be to create something Victor can’t control at all.

But if Adam thinks he can have it all, he might want to guess again. The family life he claims to want now will likely be gone if he made a power move against Victor and Victoria. But something tells us that it’s not a thought that Adam has pushed out of his mind — and even if he tries, Phyllis will inspire him to reconsider.
