Beyond the Gates Recap

Kat was at Uptown waiting for Tomas so they could celebrate his promotion when she saw Ted come in. She was going to tell him that she could’ve been nicer the last time they spoke, but before he saw her, Shanice ran over and kissed him.
Shanice was surprised when Ted mentioned that Eva knew about them. She told him that Leslie threatened her, so he admitted that they’d had a night together not that long ago when he’d drunk too much.
Kat came to the table to say hello. She showered Shanice with compliments as she took a seat. They invited Kat to order a meal with them, but she said she wouldn’t want to infringe on their “…..date??”
Ted had to take a call, so Kat asked Shanice how long “this” had been going on. Shanice assured Kat that they didn’t get involved until after her parents split up.
Kat was surprised to learn that her mom knew about them. When Ted had to go to a patient, Kat and Shanice stayed to talk. Kat’s first question was what Shanice was going to do about Leslie.
Shanice said she had her handled, and they found a common bond in the way she planned to do that. Kat decided to hang out with her new friend.
At the Dupree mansion, Sharon and Vernon tried to wake up Anita. When she came to, she insisted they didn’t call an ambulance.
Anita reminded Vernon that they were warned this could happen during chemo, and said she’d inform them at her next appointment. Vernon was worried she was dehydrated, and Sharon thought she hadn’t taken good enough care of her during her treatment.
Vernon defied Anita’s wishes and called Dr. Ahn. After, he placed another call for help, and Ted showed up. Ted tended to Anita, and Vernon thanked him for coming after how they’d treated him.
Ted told Vernon that he understood their feelings about him, but said to him, they were family. Vernon appreciated his grace and said he owed him one. Ted told Vernon that whatever they needed was on the house — permanently.
After Ted left, Anita wanted Sharon to stay for dinner and sing to her. Sharon said she’d come sing to her any time but wanted her and Vernon to have dinner alone.
Once alone, Anita ripped into Vernon for speaking on her behalf. He clapped back that he would have known before she left the hospital that something was off.
Vernon cried that she thought she died before his eyes. “I can’t lose you,” Vernon told her. “But you might,” Anita said. She told Vernon he needed to accept what could happen, and that he would be alright.
Anita said if he loved her, he had to let her be. She needed to be around the people she cared most about, because she didn’t know whether or not she’d have much time with them. Vernon hugged her.
At the country club, Tomas greeted Nicole at her table on his way to a meeting with Bill and a client. Dani joined her sister, and Nicole offered to go somewhere else. Dani insisted they stay and noted she and Bill had been getting along lately.
Tomas just smiled as he recalled seeing Dani and Bill kiss. Dani congratulated Tomas on his promotion. After Tomas left, Dani wanted to know why Nicole seemed different and chalked it up to a man. Nicole told Dani about Shanice and Ted, and defended her when Dani thought she was a backstabber.
Nicole refocused the conversation by dropping the bomb of how she and Carlton ended their date.
Nicole said she was clear with Carlton that she wasn’t ready to be exclusive; Dani encouraged her sister to get out there and experience more excitement.
Dani made Nicole promise that she wouldn’t let anyone’s idea of what was appropriate block her from getting what she needed.
At another table, Bill coached Tomas before their meeting. Tomas decided to address the elephant in the room and told Bill that he’d never out him, but wondered if he was playing with fire. Tomas asked if Dani was at risk.
Bill told Tomas he didn’t get to weigh in on his personal life. He recalled the love at first sight he had for Dani and how she was the best thing for him.
Bill noted that Dani changed over time and wasn’t the woman he fell in love with. She began forgiving every lie, every late-night meeting he had, and losing who she was. He said that, ironically, everything she did for him was what pushed him away.
Bill’s client was late, so he told Tomas to go, and he’d wait for him. Across the restaurant, Nicole said goodbye to Dani. She went home and got ready for her evening.
At the hospital, Ashley waited after her shift for Naomi. She supported her friend as she processed her BRCA gene test results, but also suggested she tell Jacob.
Naomi told her that he was focused on a stakeout and needed to stay focused to stay safe. She reminded Ashley she didn’t have cancer; it was just an increased risk for something that may never develop.
Ashley snapped that it wasn’t about Jacob’s job. She reminded how upset she was when Derek lied, and asked what was really going on. Naomi didn’t think Jacob could handle the news.
Naomi explained that Jacob was still holding out hope she’d want a child, but this gene made her more adamant in her decision. “He’s not going to understand that,” Naomi told Ashley.
Ashley brought Naomi home, as she lamented about Jacob’s case and how it was probably dangerous. She didn’t know anything because he was keeping the details a secret.
When Tomas got to Uptown, Kat told him about Shanice and how much she liked her. They were celebrating his promotion and ChelseaKat’s success when Kat’s jaw dropped.
Behind them, Nicole walked in wearing a cut-out dress. “Is that your…mom?” Tomas asked as Nicole took a seat at the bar.
Dani left but returned to the club wearing a low-cut, high-split dress that Bill had given to her years prior. She pretended to not know why he’d react the way he did when he saw her.
“Come on, Dani. We know you went home and put that dress on for my sake,” he said. He noted how it hugged her frame and showed off her legs. He wondered if she wanted to see how he would react.
