Days of our Lives: Scene of the Week Jan 19-23

The Days of our Lives Scene of the Week was a surprising moment between long-time friends, who realized they are all still learning about life — and one another.

When a show has been around for over 60 years, it’s gone through record-breaking amounts of changes. But one of its biggest, most beloved legacies is its fans.

For as many new — or newer by comparison‚ viewers that DAYS has gotten over the years and decades, there are just as many who can claim they started watching the show from the beginning, or close to it.

Over those years, they have gone through it all right along with the characters. The heartbreak, the miracles, every twist and turn that they have taken during their time in and out of Salem. There have been weddings and funerals, births and deaths.

But it’s not just for the characters: all of the viewers go through a lot of those same things (hopefully not the levitation and alien visits).

But this week, amidst some great acting and memorable moments, there was something else happening that connected with viewers.

Julie’s Bereavement Book Club

Julie Horton (Susan Seaforth Hayes) put a lot of thought and effort into planning her book club meeting. As she was grieving the loss of her husband, Doug, played by the late Bill Hayes, Julie wanted to find a way to talk about what she was feeling with those who could relate.

As she hadn’t taken on the task of organizing and leading a book club meeting, Julie was quite anxious about her endeavor, but at the last minute, her friend and coworker, Foster (Miles Anderson), offered to lead it for her.

Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) was invited, as was Marlena (Deidre Hall).

Maggie could relate to the book as someone who had been widowed twice. Marlena, recently widowed when John Black (Drake Hogestyn) died, read the book, but surprised her friends and herself when she could find the words to express her emotions.

It was an interesting scene to watch three long-time friends, who were three long-time characters, played by three long-time actresses, play out their grief.

For viewers who mourned the losses of the characters the women grieved, and the actors who played them — or perhaps could relate on a personal level — it was another part of Days of our Lives they could connect to and feel included in.

It’s one of many reasons, but it’s relatable moments like that that have helped to keep the show alive.
