Beyond the Gates Recap

At the nurses’ station, Ashley noticed Shanice’s good mood and wondered what it was about, but she was vague. When Ted came by, he told Shanice that she was right about Nicole needing a friend and called her insightful.
After Ted left, Ashley wanted to know what was going on between Shanice and Ted. Ashley noted that Shanice wasn’t surprised at all by Ted’s flirting and asked if they were together.
Shanice told Ashley that she liked to dive into other people’s tea but when it came to her own love life, she wouldn’t give a teaspoon.
Eventually, Shanice divulged that she and Ted kissed on New Year’s but then wanted to get Ashley back to work. Shanice got her to call for test results, and that’s when Ashley found out about the cancer and genetic testing.
Ted saw Vernon as he walked off the elevator and extended his well-wishes. They sat down to talk, and Vernon noted how remarkable it was that Ted kept showing up for Nicole and the kids. Ted said he would never stop as Nicole would always be family to him.
At the brownstone, Nicole came over with breakfast and wanted to talk about the importance of family, but Martin bristled at the thought that she thought they didn’t know that already. Nicole lectured that when she came in the door, she saw three people on their phones. She wanted the devices put away and for them to have quality time instead.
Nicole talked about Anita, life, and the upcoming cotililion. She told them that it was an important moment for Samantha to be presented to the social elite. Tyrell and Smitty were bemused.
Nicole got Tyrell to wake up Samantha so they could discuss the cotillion. Samantha was excited once she knew why Nicole was there, but also felt guilty, given Anita “could be dying of cancer.”
Nicole told the story of Anita’s cotillion and the importance of the tradition in the family. Tyrell interrupted with, “Gimme a break!”
Tyrell said that they were carrying on about debutants and having house managers, and that wasn’t the real life outside of their gated community.
Martin demandedthat Tyrell apologize to his grandmother. Tyrell said that he and Samantha had a life way worse than Anita ever did, and they didn’t have a singing group to save them.
Tyrell pointed out that if they hadn’t been adopted by Martin and Smitty, those people at the cotillion wouldn’t want two kids from a drug addict mother and an absentee father anywhere near them. “That’s why they live behind the gates,” he added.
Samantha staunchly moved to the side of the room with everyone else and said that even if Tyrell didn’t appreciate cotillion, she was all in on carrying on the tradition.
Nicole explained to Tyrell that the tradition did a lot more than just be a social scene. When the family found out that Tyrell’s opinion included Jessica’s perspective, Martin questioned if Tyrell was brainwashed by her.
At the country club, Vanessa tested Dani’s waterproof mascara capabilities by asking about her feelings and knowing about Anita’s diagnosis. She told her not to put on a brave face for her.
Dani said that she and Nicole were lucky to have Vanessa in their lives, and so was Joey. Vanessa was shocked that she’d say anything positive about Joey, but took the compliment.
Dani shared that Bill had been supportive, making Vanessa wonder if her new husband knew the OG model was sniffing around. Dani said how refreshing it was that Andre didn’t get jealous like Bill used to.
After Vanessa left, Vernon joined Dani. She told him that Vanessa asked about Bill and Andre and it had her feeling bad. Vernon told her to
Leslie came to the casino as summoned by Joey and ran into Randy. The two of them exchanged some snark-slash-flirtation before Randy went to get Joey.
Joey and Leslie sat down to talk when he came into the back room. Joey told her he was going to partner with her on the free clinic, but it had a condition.
When Joey said he would want a substantial return, Leslie said that she knew what he was referring to and that she knew what men wanted. Joey said he didn’t need a tug and tickle, but could see how she sunk her claws into Ted.
Joey told Leslie he wasn’t most men. In exchange for his investment, he wanted the clinic to be dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Doug McBride.
Leslie was surprised and asked Joey straight up if he felt guilty about what happened to Doug. Joey said Doug drank and gambled too much, and he had nothing to feel guilty about.
Joey clarified that the gesture was meant to honor the father of Vanessa’s children, nothing more. Leslie offered a room named after Doug instead, then sashayed out.
Later, Vanessa came in as Joey was muttering to himself that he was going to get the name changed. Joey told her the good news and Vanessa said she was proud of him.
Leslie went to Uptown to meet Marcel. She told him that she was partnering with Joey, but he advised her that Joey wasn’t someone to mess with. “Neither am I,” she cooed.
Marcel warned Leslie to ensure that Joey funded her business with legal funds. Leslie said she didn’t mind getting dirty now and then if it was with the right person. As Marcel and Leslie kissed, Randy walked in the door behind them, and saw.
