In the Beyond the Gates recap for Friday, January 2, 2026, when Bill gave Anita advice, Kat lashed out, and Vernon opened up to Dani.

At the nurses’ station, Ted pulled Shanice aside to confide that Anita had breast cancer and the BRCA gene. Ted asked Shanice’s opinion on what role he should play. Shanice said he and Nicole are divorced, but they were still family through the kids, and not to let the title change get in the way.

Shanice was aghast that Kat didn’t want to get tested and expressed how important it was, given the risks and the stats.

Tomas joined Kat at Uptown but wouldn’t drink tequila with her. She laid into him for not daydrinking with her and implied that making partner was more important than she was. Eventually, Kat explained her attitude and told Tomas that Anita had breast cancer.

Tomas was supportive, although Kat didn’t tell him about the genetic testing. She ignored a call from Ted, then Tomas offered to take her home.

Tomas got Kat settled in with some water, and she encouraged him to go back to work, noting that Chelsea was on her way home. Tomas promised he was there for her before leaving.

Ted showed up at Kat’s and let her know he knew about the testing. Ted empathized with how scared Kat was, but said that talking about it takes its power away. Ted promised he was her safe space to talk.

Later, Ted texted Shanice and said he owed her. He asked if she took kisses as payment, and her face lit up.

Tomas returned to the office and talked to Bill about the Duprees. Hayley was miffed when she saw Bill and haughtily asked how Dani was. Bill said he needed all the information first before telling her what was going on, and his concern was his girls.

Bill told Hayley about Anita, and she apologized for being so petty. Bill forgave her as he thought she didn’t know what was going on until then.

Hayley tried her usual sidling up to her husband, but he snapped to get her to back off. Bill told Hayley that when she heard what was going on, she’d realize she didn’t need to worry about Dani.

At the brownstone, Martin came home and told Smitty about the family crisis. Martin was concerned about Kat’s reluctance to get tested. Smitty wanted to get through to Kat by finding out more information.

Ted came by to see his son and assured him that he thought that if necessary, Kat would get tested. They just needed to give her the space to come to her own conclusions on it.

At the Dupree mansion, Dani and Bill came over to see Anita. Bill explained he wanted to say in person how sorry he was about the news. Dani apologized for not telling the girls before they came over.

Bill was supportive of all of them, which made Vernon uncomfortable. He pulled Dani out of the room and told her about his concerns. Dani told him they were together for the girls, as they needed them both.

In the living room, Anita quipped that she saw more of him now that he and Dani were divorced than when they were married. Bill told Anita that he had some advice about her upcoming journey.

Bill said he knew that his stroke wasn’t comparable, but the feeling of helplessness was. He knew her well enough to know she wanted to be the strong one, but he advised her to let people help.

After Bill left, Anita rested, and Dani chatted with Vernon. She told him that they were all rocked, and focused on Anita, but she had been watching Vernon, too.

Dani said she knew Vernon thought his job was to hold it all in for everyone else’s sake. She asked her dad to let her be his shoulder the way he had been for her.

Vernon cried that he didn’t know how to fight cancer, but Dani pointed out that he didn’t know how to fight racism either, and just had his refusal to back down. Vernon said that usually Anita was there by his side to fight with him.

Vernon shared that being Anita’s husband meant more to him than any other accomplishment, and he thought of waking up without her was just too much. He sobbed on Dani’s shoulder.
