Belle came to see EJ with paperwork for him to sign that would keep Kristen from going back to prison and Rachel out of the juvenile detention system.

Brady visited Kristen in the hospital. She told him she was probably heading back to Statesville and wouldn’t know where home was anyway, even if she was out of jail.

Brady told Kristen why he’d moved out of the townhouse and that he was staying at the Kiriakis estate until he found his own place. Kristen blamed EJ for all the changes in their lives.

Kristen worried that word would get out to the press about Rachel shooting EJ, and her name would be ruined forever.

Melinda came in and said she was working on getting Kristen’s charges dropped, but there was a new investigation into what happened to Peter in the crypt. Brady didn’t think Kristen could be blamed for that, but she disagreed.

Belle came in and told the group that she got EJ’s signature on the paperwork. Kristen signed her recant statement after everyone promised her that Rachel would be protected, then Melinda went to see a judge.

In the hallway, Cat bumped into Chad. She was taken aback to see him, but quickly ushered him away for his own sake. When she saw EJ, she found out that Chad and Jennifer had agreed to mediation.

Cat said she felt guilty about the custody battle, but EJ said she was under extreme duress when she pretended to be Abigail. He pointed out that Chad had forgiven her and that, in time, Thomas would as well.

EJ apologized for trying to kiss her at the house, but she wanted to forget about it. Cat said she would like to reschedule their dinner as colleague,s though, as she wanted to learn more about their time in Italy together.

In Bayview, Sophia told Rachel she was leaving, but there was some unfinished business she wanted to address first. Rachel hoped they could sneak out to see the fireworks, but Sophia thought it was too risky.

Rachel told Sophia she had to go as she had visitors coming. She promised not to tell anyone that Sophia could speak. Seconds after she left Sophia’s room, Melinda came in. She sat with Sophia and apologized for how things turned out. She said she wanted to be supportive and hugged Sophia, who cried over her shoulder.

Back in her room, Rachel was happy to see Brady when he arrived. He told her that a few things had to happen first, but they were working on getting Kristen to come see her as well.

At EJ’s office, Tony and Chad met with him to talk about Peter. Chad thought they should keep him on life support as he was their brother. “A brother who wanted us all dead,” Tony mused. EJ said that since DiMeras tended to rise from the ashes to finish what they started, they should pull the plug before Peter could do any more damage to the family. Tony thought they should defer to Kristen as the three of them weren’t qualified to make the decision.

Once alone, EJ received a call from Sydney, who was very upset. He told Belle later about it. He said that Sydney heard about the kidnapping, and she was having a panic attack because she was next. He and Sami hired bodyguards, but EJ decided to go see her as well. He wished Belle a happy New Year before leaving.
Kristen went to see Peter in his hospital room and held his hand as she apologized for what happened in the crypt. She told him that if anyone had to die in the crypt, she wished it were someone else. Kristen cried as she told her brother that she loved him no matter what.

Tony and Chad came in and told her that they wanted her to weigh in on the decision of whether or not to pull the plug on Peter. Kristen pointed out that she and Peter were adopted and not true DiMeras, but Tony didn’t think it was relevant, as he wasn’t either.

Kristen said that the doctors told her that Peter would likely be in that condition forever, and if he did wake up, he’d be a shell of himself. She didn’t think he would want to live like that and would want to die with whatever dignity he had left. She thought they should let him breathe on his own and let God decide.

Alone with Peter again, Kristen begged her brother to fight to live, saying she couldn’t live with her decision if he died.

EJ returned to his office and found Cat at his desk. She covered why she was snooping, and he was distracted by Sydney. EJ asked Cat to hold down the fort while he was gone. She was sure she could manage with Rita’s help, and EJ reminded her he was only a phone call away.

Chad came in, so Cat made a quick exit. EJ told Chad about Sydney, and he was leaving to spend some time with her. He told Chad that he arranged for Melinda Trask to represent him for his custody case in his absence.

Chad updated EJ on Kristen’s decision about Peter. Chad reminded him that Peter was their brother, but EJ saw him as a monster who wanted to murder them.
